Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When going swimming in a pool, which of the following things is a smart thing to do?

Answer: Wear swim fins if you cannot swim

Until you learn how to swim on your own, you should always wear swim fins even if an adult is nearby.

Running in the pool area can cause you to slip and fall. Eating in the pool can cause you to choke. Going in the pool alone is dangerous. You should always be accompanied by an adult.
2. When playing sports, it is important to drink plenty of which liquid?

Answer: Water

Water will keep you hydrated while you run around and have fun. By staying hydrated, your body will remain strong and remain a healthy temperature. If you become dehydrated, especially while playing sports, it can cause fatigue and headaches.
3. When riding in a car, always wear your seatbelt. Children under age 13 should sit in the back seat and in which position?

Answer: Sitting upright

The seatbelt works properly when you (or any passenger) are sitting up straight. If you move into another position, the seatbelt loses its efficiency and may not be able to protect you properly in an accident.
4. If you need to cross the street after getting off the school bus before the bus moves away, what is the proper way to do so?

Answer: Walk in front of the school bus

The proper way to cross the street after exiting the school bus is to walk a few steps in front of the bus. By doing this, the bus driver is able to see you and will wait and watch until you have safely crossed the street. By walking too close in front of the bus or behind the bus, the driver may not be able to see you.
5. Which of the following things should you never play with because it might be hot?

Answer: Stove

You should never play with or near the stove because it might be hot and you could burn yourself. You should also never play with the refrigerator because it is not a toy and it could also be dangerous (but a refrigerator is not hot!).
6. If you are using the internet and you receive a message from someone asking for your address, what should you do?

Answer: Do not respond and tell a parent or guardian right away.

If someone contacts you on the internet, you should get an adult right away. This is true even if you know the person because it could actually be someone else impersonating a friend or family member. You should never tell anyone, especially a stranger, your address or any personal information online.

Your parents should be able to handle the situation properly and notify the authorities.
7. If you and your parents are out for a walk and come across a neighbor with her dog, when would it be appropriate and safe for you to pet the dog?

Answer: When you have permission from your parents and the dog's owner

You should always have permission from your parents and the dog's owner before petting the dog. Some dogs can be aggressive and do not always appreciate being petted or being petted unexpectedly. Once your parents and the owner determine you can pet the dog, do so gently.
8. When riding a bicycle it is important to wear a helmet. But you should also wear a helmet when riding which of the following other items?

Answer: Scooter

A scooter is similar to a bicycle in which accidents happen frequently and a simple fall can lead to serious head injuries if you fall while not wearing a helmet. Such accidents are unlikely to happen on a Ferris wheel, train or airplane.
9. You do not need to wear sunscreen on cloudy, summer days even if you do spend a lot of time outside.

Answer: False

You can still get sunburned on cloudy days. Although it might not appear to be sunny, the sun's rays can still pass through clouds and cause irritating (and damaging) sunburns.
10. During the winter, which of the following places is it appropriate and safe to go ice skating?

Answer: An ice skating rink

An ice skating rink or arena is the safest place to ice skate because it was specifically meant for such an activity. A partially frozen lake is dangerous because you could fall through the ice. An icy road may be too slippery and may even have cars sliding around on it. You should never go into a stranger's backyard for any reason.
