Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which one of these birds is flightless?

Answer: Emu

The emu is the tallest bird in Australia. It has three toes that face forward and can run fifteen to twenty-five kilometers a day. They swallow rocks so that they can grind food in their gizzard and the males sit on the eggs for the fifty-five day incubation period. The emu can't fly, but it has a pair of wings that are one-tenth the size of its body.
2. Which one of these birds can fly?

Answer: Wild Turkey

Wild turkeys are the most popular birds in North America. They have 5,000 to 7,000 feathers on their body. During the day they search for food and at night they stay close to the trees. Female turkeys incubate their eggs for a month after which the poults (baby turkeys) stay close to their mother for the first year of life.

The wild turkey can fly up to thirty-five miles an hour. Statesman Ben Franklin wanted the wild turkey as the national bird instead of the bald eagle.
3. Which one of these birds can fly?

Answer: Cardinal

Cardinals were once kept as song birds. When the Migratory Bird Treaty Act was passed in 1918, the trading of cardinals ended. The female cardinal and the male cardinal are different in appearance. The male cardinal is red and the female cardinal is brown. During the summer, the cardinal feeds on insects. In the winter, the cardinal feeds on vegetable matter and seeds.
4. Which one of these birds can't fly?

Answer: Ostrich

Ostriches are the largest and heaviest living bird. With a speed of seventy-five kilometers an hour, an ostrich can outrun most animals. They only have two toes on each foot, unlike other flightless birds. Female ostriches can lay up to fifteen eggs every other day during breeding; she then sits on her eggs for at least forty-two days.
5. Which of these birds can't fly?

Answer: Penguin

Penguins live seventy-five percent of their life in water. Their clawed feet are positioned farther back on their bodies so that they can easily stand on land. Penguins are nearsighted. For food, penguins eat fish and crustaceans. When female penguins mate, they normally mate with the same male penguin each year. Both male and female penguins share in the incubation of their eggs.
6. Which of these birds can't fly?

Answer: Dodo

The dodo bird, which is now extinct, was only found on the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. Dodo birds were caught and eaten by sailors and settlers of the island. The dodo bird gets its name from the Portuguese word which means simpleton. The last dodo bird died in 1681.
7. Which of these birds can fly?

9. Which of these birds can fly?

Answer: Parakeets

The parakeet is one of the top talking birds of the world. There are ninety varieties of parakeets in the world. The male parakeet makes a better bird than the female parakeet because he is less aggressive. The male parakeet is more talkative than the female parakeet. Female parakeets can lay eggs every day during the breeding season (which doesn't include the months of June, July, or August), and the eggs hatch in seventeen days.

After the baby parakeets are born, the father will take over their care.
10. Which of these birds can fly?

Answer: Peacock

In 1963, peacocks became the national bird of India. The female is known as the peahen and the male is known as the peacock. The peacock has the beautiful plumage, but the peahen doesn't. Both the peacock and the peahen can fly, but for very short distances.

The peacock shows its plumage to the peahen during mating season. The peahen can incubate four to eight eggs for a month before they hatch.
