Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What were the names of the calves Almanzo started to train on his ninth birthday?

Answer: Star and Bright

Father had made Almanzo a calf-yoke of red cedar, and Almanzo stayed off school in order to begin to train the two calves.
2. In addition to the calf-yoke Father made, Almanzo received another hand-made birthday present that year. What was it?

Answer: a hand-sled

Father made the hand-sled of hickory, and Almanzo played with it that afternoon.
3. What was the first thing Laura got for her fifth birthday?

Answer: a spanking

Pa gave her a gentle spanking - one for each year and a sixth spank for the year ahead. She was then given her other presents - five little cakes and a wooden man, and Mary gave her a new dress for her doll, Charlotte.
4. What special song did Pa play for Laura's fifth birthday?

Answer: Pop goes the Weasel

Laura and Mary would watch while he played, but try as they might, they could not see Pa make the violin go 'pop'!
5. What was the next birthday Laura mentioned in her books?

Answer: Ben Woodworth's birthday

Three books go past before the next birthday is mentioned! The invitation to Ben Woodworth's birthday party was the next Laura tells us about. (Nellie Oleson's party was mentioned in the meantime but there is no evidence that it was a birthday celebration).
6. The guests at which party had a whole orange each?

Answer: Ben Woodworth's party

Nellie's party and Mary and Laura's party were each written of in 'On the Banks of Plum Creek', and Ben's birthday party was recorded in 'Little Town on the Prairie'. Mary Power, to our knowledge, did not have a party.
7. At Ben's party the guests were asked if they were 'playing Quaker Meeting' because they were all very awkward. Who asked this?

Answer: Ben's brother

Ben's brother, Jim, asked this question, and it broke the ice as they all laughed.
8. What did Jim demonstrate to the guests at Ben's birthday party?

Answer: electricity

The party went downstairs to play games (such as blind man's bluff) in the waiting room, and there Jim had everyone hold hands to send a small current of electricity through them.
9. Why didn't Mary go to Ben's party?

Answer: because she was at college

Mary was at College in Vinton, Iowa at the time.
10. Laura's birthday was so close to Almanzo's that they had a dual celebration between the two during their first year together. What did they do to make the day special?

Answer: a birthday cake was made

The glassware set was their Christmas present just a month and a bit before. For the dual birthday celebration they had a cake, and 'a little extra pain was taken in the cooking and arranging of the simple meal of bread, meat and vegetables.'
