Answer: a stump

When Pa was coming back from town, it started getting dark on him. In the shadows he saw what he thought was a bear. He was terrified since he did not have his gun. After a standoff that seemed to take forever he ran after the bear with a big stick. When he got to the bear it turned out to be an old burned black stump.
2. What was Ma's delaine?

Answer: a dress

Ma's delaine dress was dark green, with a pattern all over it that looked like ripe strawberries. Laura had never seen Ma wear it before. When ma said she was wearing it to the sugaring off dance, Laura knew the dance must be something special.
3. Who won the jigging contest, Grandma or Uncle George?

Answer: Grandma

When Grandma and Uncle George got into the jigging contest everyone told him he could not beat Grandma. After several minutes and being almost breathless, George threw up his arms and said, "I'm beat." Grandma jigged a couple of more minutes. The jig is a type of dance.
