Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does Lemony write as a dedication to Beatrice in this book?

Answer: When we met, my life began. Soon afterward, yours ended.

Where does he get all these witty lines from?
2. What was the race that the Baudelaire parents took part in before they died?

Answer: The Sixteenth Annual Run-a-thon

Their legs were so sore that they could only serve their kids salad for dinner because they were too tired to reach the other food that was on the stove.
3. What were the two drinks that were 'in' when the Baudelaires were staying with the Squalors?

Answer: Aqueous martini & Parsley soda

An aqueous martini is simply a glass of water with an olive in it while Parsley soda is a foul-tasting drink that replaced the aqueous martini when it was 'out'.
4. Where was Klaus delighted to visit again?

Answer: Akhamatova Bookstore

Violet was delighted to visit the Verne Invention Museum while Sunny was delighted to visit Pincus Hospital, where she was born.
5. What were the two books that Lemony mentioned that were in the Squalor library?

Answer: Boots Were In in 1812 & Trout: In France They're Out

In the Squalor library, the books are merely descriptions of when an item in various times in history were 'in' or 'out'.
6. What does 'Reysca' mean?

Answer: Or you could simply leave the penthouse and never return.

Sunny said this were they first meet Olaf dressed up as 'Gunther'. The other quotes, except the one about Jerome, have been said by Sunny in her 'language'.
7. What was the 'in' restaurant that the Baudelaires went to for dinner and where was it located?

Answer: Cafe Salmonella, Fish District

According to Lemony, Fish District smells, sounds and looks like fish and would probably taste like fish too. Oh yeah, and Cafe Salmonella has waiters and waitresses dressed like salmon, has portraits of salmon and even has salmon in vases, not flowers. One more thing: Sake Gui Yu Saumon is actually salmon in three different languages. Hehehe.
8. Which of these dishes did the Baudelaires not have for dinner?

Answer: Smoked salmon sandwiches with salmon chips

It made the Baudelaires never want to have another bit of salmon ever again, and although I'm a fan of salmon, I would probably feel the same after visiting Cafe Salmonella.
9. Which of these things were not in Esme's long list of 'in' things after her visit with the King of Arizona?

Answer: Khaki pants

And she goes on an on and on... Oh yeah, in fact, the Baudelaires accidentally remind her about vacuum cleaners being 'in', and a bunch of other stuff.
10. What words does Sunny say that confuses her siblings?

Answer: Hansel & Gretel

It's actually a rare chance that the elder Baudelaires get confused by their sister but this is one, no, two of the times they do. Anyway, Sunny was thinking of a plan to find Olaf in the penthouse and it involved breadcrumbs.
11. Which of these rooms does Lemony not mention when he mentions the various rooms found in the Squalor penthouse?

Answer: Lunch rooms

This is the full version: "Living rooms, dining rooms, breakfast rooms, snack rooms, sitting rooms, standing rooms, ballrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, and the assortment of rooms that seemed to have no purpose at all."
12. What was the smallest amount that Lemony used to represent when things were not 'O.K.'?

Answer: One twenty-seventh

Here's the full version: "It was not O.K. It was not half O.K. It was not even one twenty-seventh O.K."
13. What was the item that Esme wanted Jerome to buy and where was the place that sold that item?

Answer: Yellow paper clips, Stationery District

It seems that this is an excuse so that Esme can be alone with the orphans, thus pushing them down the ersatz elevator.
14. How hot did Violet heat up the fire tongs and what colour was the oven that she used to used to heat them up?

Answer: 500 degrees Fahrenheit, Blue

The fire tongs were supposed to free the Quagmires. Unfortunately, Olaf had already smuggled them in the red herring statue.
15. What was Lot #25?

Answer: A rare and valuable piano

Lot #16 is the enormous globe, Lot #48 is the red herring statue and Lot #50 is V.F.D. where the Baudelaires thought the Quagmires were hidden but this 'V. F. D.' stands for 'Very Fancy Doilies'.
16. What was the button that opened the ersatz elevator?

Answer: Its 'up' button.

It is really quite a giveaway as the penthouse is on the top floor.
17. Who mistook the Baudelaires for ghosts?

Answer: A mailman

They had come to the end of the passageway and realised they were at the remains of their own house. Suddenly, a mailman appears and thinks they're ghosts.
18. What award did Veblen Hall win?

Answer: The Door Prize

It had won the award way before the Baudelaires were born and won because of its polished wooden planks, its exquisite brass hinges and its gorgeous, shiny doorknob, fashioned out of the world's second-finest crystal.
19. How much was the bid that won Lot #46, the vase with blue flowers?

Answer: $253

A woman in a pinstripe suit (of course) got the vase with the blue flowers.
20. What is the clue at the end of the book to 'The Vile Village'?

Answer: A crow

Although all those stuff appear in the book, a crow is seen flying above the weeping Baudelaires.

I hope you were not too depressed after taking this quiz. The world is quiet here, Seagerald.
