Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the scientific name for brown bears?

Answer: Ursus arctos

Ursus maritimus is the scientific name for polar bears. Selenarctos thibetanus is the scientific name for Asiatic black bears. Ursus malayanus is the scientific name for sun bears.
2. When a brown bear attacks a herd of deer, which deer is it most likely to kill?

Answer: The youngest

Brown bears kill the youngest, because it's easiest to catch. They could also kill moose, elk, caribou and bison with this method.
3. Why do brown bears in the wild hibernate in winter?

Answer: Because there is less food

Since there's less food in winter, brown bears stock up on food in summer before hibernating so they don't go hungry. Bears in captivity don't hibernate because there is a ready food supply.
4. Which one of these doesn't the brown bear eat?

Answer: They can eat all of these

Brown bears are omnivores, so they eat meat and plants. Their diet changes in different seasons and different habitats.
5. Why is the grizzly bear (a type of brown bear) called the grizzly bear?

Answer: Because of the grizzling of its fur

The grizzling of a grizzly bear's fur makes the tips of the hairs lighter. Most people think it's called the grizzly bear because of its aggressive nature, but this is not the case.
6. When are brown bears usually most active?

Answer: Dawn and dusk

Brown bears are usually active at dawn and dusk. If you want to walk through bear country, doing it during the day is safest.
7. What's the largest brown bear in the world?

Answer: Kodiak bear

The largest brown bear in the world is the Kodiak bear, standing from 3.5 to 4.5 meters and weighing 800-1400 pounds (for males). The polar bear is the largest bear in the world, but it's not a brown bear.
8. In which of these places won't you find a brown bear?

Answer: Australia

You might think a koala bear is a bear because it is called that, but koala bears aren't really bears. Wombats also look like bears but they aren't bears either. There are no brown bears in Australia.
9. What is the least likely reason for a brown bear attack?

Answer: They kill humans on sight

In Scandinavia, only 4 bear attacks have resulted in death since 1902. But in North America, there are an average of two fatal attacks per year.
10. A brown bear is what type of animal?

Answer: A mammal

Brown bears are mammals, and that means they are warm-blooded. They also give birth to live young, not eggs. Thank you for playing my quiz! I hope you enjoyed it!
