Disarming is a basic move in dueling, because without a wand, most witches and wizards are powerless. The Disarming Spell (a.k.a. "Expelliarmus") was first introduced in the second book during the Dueling Club. It soon became Harry's signature move, one that could easily give any number of his disguises away.

Answer: Protego

"Protego" is a Shield Charm. It creates a shield in midair that deflects minor spells and renders them useless. It was first introduced in the fourth book while Harry was training for the third task, and was one of the many spells taught in the D.A. It saved Harry and his friends from being stunned and jinxed multiple times.

Answer: Incendio

"Incendio" is a spell that creates ordinary fire. It has appeared several times throughout the books, including the fourth book, when Mr. Weasley made a fire in the Dursley's fireplace, and the sixth book, when a Death Eater set Hagrid's hut on fire. However, it is not too useful, as it can easily be countered by the spell "Aguamenti," which douses the area with water.

Answer: Accio Broomstick

"Accio" is a Summoning Charm, which causes objects to magically fly through the air toward you. They were first introduced in the fourth book and have been used widely ever since. However, a simple spell can be placed on an object so it cannot be Summoned, as Harry discovered while searching for Horcruxes in the seventh book.

Answer: Think of something very happy.

Dementors feed off the happy thoughts in people, leaving them with very depressing thoughts. However, a very strong happy memory can help you avoid these dementors. Thinking of something very happy and saying "Expecto Patronum" will produce a Patronus that chases away the dementor. Harry learned how to produce a Patronus from Professor Lupin, and taught it to everyone in the D.A.

Answer: The Cruciatus Curse

"Crucio" tortures its victims. They often writhe on the ground and scream. This curse was first introduced in the fourth book, but no one had the nerve to use it then. Harry used it on Bellatrix Lestrange in the fifth book, but it didn't do much because you have to "mean" an Unforgivable Curse. Harry finally "meant" it in the seventh book, when he used it on Amycus Carrow.

Answer: She is hoisted into the air by her ankle.

"Levicorpus" was written in the Half-Blood Prince's potion book. It hoists a person into the air by one ankle, and they are left dangling upside-down. It can be used for laughs, as James Potter showed when he used it on Snape, but it could also be a real annoyance in a duel.

Answer: Kill you

"Avada Kedavra" is the Killing Curse. It is an Unforgivable Curse frequently used by Voldemort and his Death Eaters. Just using it on one person can earn you a life sentence in Azkaban. It was taught to the students by the fake Mad-Eye Moody in the fourth book, but none of them ever felt the need to use it until the seventh book.

Answer: Full-Body Bind

"Petrificus Totalus" completely paralyzes your opponent in a duel. They cannot move any part of their body except for maybe their eyes, and are pretty much useless for the rest of the duel. It is quite a useful spell that pops up often during the series of books.

Answer: Obliviate

A Memory Charm wipes the victim's mind of the current time away completely. The memory is forgotten and the person will be momentarily confused. Memory Charms can sometimes be undone, however.
