Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these sports can last as long as five days and may not have a winner even then?

Answer: Cricket

The 'finishing line' in a Test Match in cricket is the end of play on the fifth day, unless one team has already won the game. This means that the match can end without either side winning and the match is declared a draw. All that hard work and nobody wins.
2. In a motorsport race, what type of flag is waved at the drivers to tell them that they've completed the final lap and crossed the finish line?

Answer: Chequered flag

A chequered flag is covered in black and white squares - just like a chess (or chequers) board. The phrase "taking the chequered flag" is often used by race commentators to tell the audience that the leading driver has completed all of his or her laps and won the race.

A red flag means that the race has been stopped, a black flag waved at a driver means that they have been disqualified and a red and yellow striped flag is a warning of a slippery track.
3. Which of these racing animals would be fastest across the winning line?

Answer: Horse

A horse can run up to 45 miles an hour in a race. There are different types of horse racing but the quickest is on a flat surface without any jumps. Other animals have been used in speed racing including camels, dogs and even elephants. Small animals can also race including mice and even snails, but you might have to wait all day for them to finish.
4. During the Olympic Games, gymnasts compete in several different events. Which of these events are for both men and women gymnasts?

Answer: Vault

The men and women gymnasts compete separately at the Olympic games. Men compete in six events: floor exercise, vault, pommel horse, still rings, parallel bars and horizontal bar. Women complete in four events: floor exercise, vault, uneven bars, and balance beam.
5. During winter some racers glide down snowy slopes. What equipment do they have on their feet?

Answer: skis

Skiers can compete in many types of events. There is downhill racing, cross-country, and even ski jumping. Some of the races record the time taken by each racer and determine the winner as the fastest to cross the finish line.
6. In a swimming race what must each competitor do to register the fact that they've reached the finish?

Answer: Touch the wall

Swimmers touch the wall at the end of their final length of the pool to indicate that they've completed the race. Since many races have very close finishes it is very important that swimmers practice touching the wall, so that they can do it as quickly as possible without losing any speed or missing a stroke.
7. Which of these is NOT a type of brake found on a bicycle to slow you down?

Answer: Tea breaks

Rim brakes are on the edge of the bicycle wheel. A disc brake is attached the wheel hub. A drum brake is a cylinder in the middle of the wheel. A tea break is when you get tired of cycling.
8. In a grand slam tennis singles match, how many sets does a male player have to win in order to beat his opponent?

Answer: 3

At grand slam events - the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open - the men's singles matches are played over a maximum of five sets. The first player to win three sets wins the match. Since sets can often take around an hour to play, having to win any more than that would make matches far too long given the amount of running around required!
9. In which of these sports would eight people be travelling backwards with one person helping them by shouting to make sure they work together?

Answer: Rowing

The eight men (or women) sit one behind the other in their boat while the cox steers the boat, makes sure the rowers keep a rhythm and encourages them in their efforts to reach the finish. Of course, you can't actually see a finish line on water.
10. Which of these is the longest distance running race at an Olympic Games?

Answer: Marathon

A marathon is the longest Olympic running race. It is 26 miles 385 yards and can take over two hours to complete. The distance comes from the distance between the site of the Battle of Marathon and the city of Athens in Greece, which was run by a messenger to report the result of the battle.
