The sorceress, Thaegan, has 13 children - Hot, Tot, Jin, Jod, Fie, Fly, Zan, Zod, Pik, Snik, Lun, Lod and Ichabod. Jin and Jod drowned in quicksand in Chapter 10 (quick thinking) from "Lake of Tears". The rest were killed when they were fighting over Lief, Barda and Jasmine after the three were trapped at the beginning of the book "City of the Rats". Ichabod was the only one to survive the fight.

The companions had stopped at Tom's shop in "City of the Rats". Doom had entered to buy something but had not spoken to the companions. Later they ran into him again in "The Shifting Sands" when they entered the Rithmere Games. Then Doom turned out to be the leader of the resistance stronghold.

The Ak-baba was heading for the City of the Rats because the smoke was billowing high in the sky. There was no shelter around and the companions were worried that the Ak-baba would find them so they hid in the river under Lief's cloak which has the power to make its wearer invisible. The fish in the river helped them by covering them further and the Ak-baba didn't see them.

Using the water from the Dreaming Spring, Lief dreamed of his parents' house but it was empty and the Shadow Lord's mark was on the gate. When he woke up the kin told him that the Dreaming Spring allows you to see real events. Lief dreams of his father and learns that his parents have been taken prisoner by the Shadow Lord because he found out about the plan to restore the belt of Deltora.

The companions saw this sign before entering the Shifting Sands. However the sign was well worn and they couldn't make out everything it said. It was only later that Lief realized exactly what the sign had said and what it meant.

Answer: Jasmine pulled out a rhyme that belonged to Endon

In "Return to Del" Doom is severely wounded by an O1 and Lief takes him, Barda and Jasmine back to his house. Doom experiences a flashback to his past and starts mumbling aloud. It is revealed there that Jasmine is his daughter. She pulls out a little rhyme. That rhyme was the one that led to a secret passageway into the castle of Del. Lief and Barda believe that Jasmine is the heir because they assumed that Endon had given it to her.

The companions had already found the gems by that stage and were now looking for the heir who could wear the belt and repel the Shadow Lord. "Return to Del" is the last book in the series.

Answer: Pushed him off the tower

Prandine had Endon, Jarred and Sharn trapped in the tower where the belt of Deltora was usually kept. Sharn tricked Prandine into thinking there was something out the window and Prandine went to check. Sharn pushed him out the window and he fell to his death. Prandine didn't think she was a threat so he underestimated her.

Answer: He fell off the ship when the pirates attacked

Lief, Barda and Jasmine were traveling on a ship and at night when pirates attacked them. Jasmine was dressed up so she wouldn't be spotted by O1s but her costume was ripped apart by the pirates and an O1 revealed itself and attacked her. Barda fell off the ship during the fight and Lief and Jasmine thought him to be dead.

Answer: Lief

No one knew who the heir was to begin with. At the end it was suggested at some stage that both Dain and Jasmine were the heir to Deltora. But then it is revealed that Lief is the true heir when he put the belt on at the end after rearranging the order of the gems. The belt shone for him and the Shadow Lord was repelled and retreated back to the Shadowlands.
