Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Most of us will remember Peter Rabbit, and his escapades in Mr McGregor's garden. What colour was the jacket he lost there in 'The Tale of Peter Rabbit'?

Answer: Blue

Not only do we see Peter wearing his blue jacket on the cover and in the early parts of the story, it is described by Beatrix Potter as he tries to escape from Mr McGregor: "After losing them [his shoes], he ran on four legs and went faster, so that I think he might have got away altogether if he had not unfortunately run into a gooseberry net, and got caught by the large buttons on his jacket.

It was a blue jacket with brass buttons, quite new." He had to wriggle out of it in order to complete his escape.

As we find out later, this was the second set of clothes he had lost in a week - quite an expensive child! Mr McGregor used Peter's shoes and jacket to make a scarecrow.
2. In 'The Tale of Benjamin Bunny', Benjamin Bunny and Peter Rabbit pay another visit to the garden of Mr McGregor. What relationship was Benjamin to Peter?

Answer: Cousin

This book was published two years after 'The Tale of Peter Rabbit', but the events clearly occur shortly after those of the original book. Peter and his cousin visit Mr McGregor's garden, and recover his lost jacket and shoes. After adventures that include being trapped in a basket by a cat until Benjamin's father comes to free them, they return to Peter's home, where his mother is very glad to see the recovered clothing.
3. In 'The Tale of the Flopsy Bunnies', Peter is an adult rabbit. Which of his sisters is married to Benjamin, and mother to the eponymous bunnies?

Answer: Flopsy

The title refers to the six children of Flopsy and Benjamin, who (you'll be amazed to hear) get into trouble when they fall asleep in Mr McGregor's heap of discarded vegetables. Peter has become a solid citizen, running a grocery business, while Flopsy is often short of food for her large family.

After Mr McGregor captures the children and puts them in a sack, they are freed by Thomasina Tittlemouse, who gnaws a hole in the bag through which they can escape. This book's illustrations of the garden are considered one of its main attractions.
4. In 1910, 'The Tale of Mrs. Tittlemouse' gave Thomasina Tittlemouse a featured role. What noun best describes the focus of her attention in this book?

Answer: Cleanliness

Mrs Tittlemouse is described as "a most terribly tidy little mouse always sweeping and dusting the soft sandy floors" of her underground house. She spends quite a bit of time trying to fend off invading insects and spiders, so they won't make a mess, before being devastated by a visit from Mr Jackson, a toad who makes a dreadful mess during his stay.

She eventually gets everything cleaned up, and throws a party which Mr Jackson must attend through the window, as he is not allowed inside.
5. In 'The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin', the squirrels are gathering nuts on Owl Island, when Nutkin provokes Old Brown the owl one time too many, losing most of his tail as a result. How does he do this?

Answer: Singing riddles

Each day, Nutkin has a different riddle to chant, while his cousins diligently gather nuts after having left a gift for the owl. The riddle that finally makes Mr Brown snap is this riddle about the wind:

"Arthur O'Bower has broken his band,
He comes roaring up the land!
The King of Scots with all his power,
Cannot turn Arthur of the Bower!"

Mr Brown captures Nutkin, planning to skin him; Nutkin squirms to freedom, but leaves half his tail behind, and spends the rest of his life avoiding riddles.
6. Beatrix Potter often said that 'The Tailor of Gloucester' was her personal favourite of all her books. Animals of what sort help the tailor complete the elegant waistcoat, destined to be worn by the Mayor of Gloucester at his wedding on Christmas Day?

Answer: Mice

The tailor finds some mice that his cat Simpkin has trapped under some teacups, and frees them, because he is fond of mice. When the tailor takes ill and is unable to sew the elegant waistcoat he has in progress before it must be completed, the mice sew it all for him, except the bit that needs the thread that Simpkin has hidden away, and which he brings out in shame at his previous sulk over losing the mice he was planning to have for dinner.

The waistcoat is completed, and the tailor's fortune is made.
7. 'The Story of Miss Moppet' tells about a kitten who is being teased by a mouse. Do we ever find out what Miss Moppet's first name is?

Answer: Yes

Moppet is, in fact, the first name of the gorgeous tabby kitten in this book, and her nemesis is known only as the Mouse. She bumps her head chasing him as he disappears behind a cupboard, then wraps it in a dustcloth and peeps out through a hole in the cloth to watch the mouse.

When he gets too close she catches him, then ties him up in the duster and tosses it around for a while, but is saddened to discover, when she opens it, that he has escaped through the hole. The plot is pretty thin, but the kitten is adorably drawn.
8. 'The Tale of Ginger and Pickles' tells about two shopkeepers whose business fails because they offer unlimited credit to their clients, many of whom are familiar figures from other Beatrix Potter books. What kind of animals are Ginger and Pickles?

Answer: Ginger is a cat, Pickles is a dog

They are natural predators of most of their clients, who include the frog Jeremy Fisher, the rat Samuel Whiskers, the hedgehog Mrs Tiggy-Winkle, and the rabbits Benjamin Bunny and Peter Rabbit - but you have to look at the illustrations to see most of these, as only Samuel Whiskers is identified by name.

The only other shop in town is run by Tabitha Twitchit, a cat we meet in other books. Finally, to restore competition in the village's economy, Sally Henny Penny, a hen who figures in several other stories, reopens the shop, this time on a cash-only basis.
9. 'The Tale of Tom Kitten' tells about the disgraceful behavior of Tom and his two sisters while their mother is preparing for and holding an elegant tea party. Which of these do they NOT do?

Answer: Bite the guests

Tom does scratch his mother while she is dressing him in party clothes, but there is no biting of guests, just high-spirited rebellion against being expected to behave politely. Mittens, Tom and Moppet are dressed up, then sent to the garden to be out of the way while their mother, Tabitha Twitchit, prepares for her party.

After getting grass stains all over themselves, they climb the wall and wander away, meeting the Puddle-Ducks who take what is left of their clothing. When their mother discovers them, she sends them to bed, as they are not presentable for the party, but they manage to make enough noise to disturb proceedings.

The illustrations show just how much of a mess three playful kittens can make in a bedroom.
10. 'The Tale of Mr Tod' tells the story of the kidnapping and subsequent rescue of the Flopsy Bunnies. Who was the kidnapper, who planned to eat the bunnies?

Answer: Tommy Brock

Tommy Brock, a badger, kidnaps the bunnies while they are being watched by Mr Bouncer, their paternal grandfather. He hides them in an oven in a little-used lair of Mr Tod, a neighbourhood fox. When Mr Tod returns home and discovers Tommy Brock squatting there, a fight ensues. During it, Benjamin Bunny and Peter Rabbit rescue the bunnies, who are Benjamin's children.

This was the final tale to involve Peter Rabbit, who started it all off.
