When Hagrid is at the counter asking the man for the ingredients, Harry is looking at things like "silver unicorn horns at twenty-one Galleons each and minuscule, glittery black beetle eyes(five Knuts a scoop)."

When Harry is in Ollivander's wand shop, he tries many different wands. The wand he buys is holly, phoenix feather, eleven inches and nice and supple. The other answers are two of the other wands he tries.

When the Dursleys are going to the zoo for Dudley's birthday, Harry was going to go to Mrs Figg's house for her to look after him because the Dursleys don't want Harry to go with them. Mrs Figg broke her leg and can't look after him after all, so they think of other people who could mind him. Uncle Vernon suggests phoning up his sister Marge, but Aunt Petunia says no, so Uncle Vernon says "What about what's-her-name, your friend-Yvonne?". Yvonne can't mind Harry because she is on holiday in Majorca.

Before the first Quidditch match of the year, Gryffindor vs. Slytherin, Harry is not eating anything because he is nervous. Hermione tells him to have some toast, but Harry says that he isn't hungry. Seamus says to Harry "you need your strength; seekers are always the ones who get nobbled by the other team". Harry says thanks to Seamus while watching him pile ketchup on his sausages.

Snowy, Tufty and Tibbles are the names of Mrs Figg's cats; the other cat that is mentioned in the book is Mr Paws. Mrs Figg lives two streets away from the Dursleys and every year on Dudley's Birthday, Harry has to go to her house. Harry hates it at her house because it smells like cabbages, and Mrs Figg always makes Harry look at photographs of all the cats she has ever owned.

In the list of things that Harry has to buy for his first year at Hogwarts, there is a list of books that he will need. He has to buy 'Magical Drafts and Potions' by Arsenius Jigger. Quentin Trimble wrote 'The Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection'; Adalbert Waffling wrote 'Magical Theory' and Phyllida Spore wrote 'One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi'.

For Christmas, Harry was not expecting any presents from anybody and was surprised when he woke up and found a small pile of them at the end of his bed. The first present that he opened was a wooden flute from Hagrid, the second was a very small package with a note that contained fifty pence from the Durselys.

The third present was from Mrs Weasley, a Weasley jumper and some home-made fudge. The fourth present he opened was from Hermione, and it was a large box of chocolate frogs; then he got his invisibility cloak.

Hermione got Ron some Bertie Bott's Every-Flavour Beans.

At the end of the book, when the house cup is being awarded, Dumbledore announces the number of points each house has got. In fourth place is Gryffindor with 312 points, third is Hufflepuff with 352 points, second is Ravenclaw with 426 points and first is Slytherin with 472 points. Slytherin are winning, until Dumbledore awards an extra 170 points to Gryffindor for Harry, Ron, Hermione and Neville. Gryffindor then wins the house cup with 482 points.

Down in the dungeon Harry met Professor Quirrell and Voldemort, while trying to get the Philosopher's Stone. After Voldemort asks Harry for the Stone, Voldemort says that Harry's parents died begging him for mercy; Harry calls him a liar. Voldemort is talking about Harry and his father being brave and says, "but your mother needn't have died... she was trying to protect you... Now give me the stone, unless you want her to have died in vain". Voldemort shouts "SEIZE HIM!" and Harry feels Quirrell's hand close on his wrist. Harry feels the pain in his scar, Quirrell lets go, and the pain leaves Harry.

He looks for Quirrell and sees him "hunched in pain, looking at his fingers- they were blistering before his eyes". In the film Professor Quirrell crumbles up.

When Harry and Ron are on the Hogwarts Express, Harry buys lots of sweets off the trolley lady. He buys a bag of Bertie Bott's Every-Flavour Beans. Ron warns Harry about the flavours, saying you can get spinach, liver and tripe. Ron picks up a green one, looks at it carefully, bites into the corner then says "Blaaargh - see? Sprouts".
