Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As the story opens, we find a very confused muggle Prime Minister being visited by both Cornelius Fudge and the new Minister for Magic. It is revealed that one of the Ministry of Magic's Aurors has been assigned to work with the muggle Prime Minister, to keep him safe. Which Auror is this?

Answer: Kingsley Shacklebolt

With Voldemort's return no longer a secret, the destructive behaviour of the Death Eaters had already begun to impact on the muggle world. The Minster for Magic has placed Kingsley Shacklebolt as a secretary for the muggle Prime Minister, to make sure that the Death Eaters do not try to control him with an Imperius Curse.
2. Who came to retrieve Harry from Privet Drive, and take him to The Burrow?

Answer: Professor Dumbledore

Dumbledore had many reasons for choosing to personally escort Harry to The Burrow. It gave him an opportunity to finally meet Vernon and Petunia Dursley, and to talk to them about Harry's coming of age. It gave him a chance to discuss Harry's new inheritance with Harry, and it also allowed him to use Harry as a persuasion to convince Horace Slughorn to take up a teaching position at Hogwarts.
3. Who inherited the Black estate, including the house on Grimmauld Place (which had been used as the headquarters for the Order of the Phoenix), and the house elf, Kreacher?

Answer: Harry Potter

There was a concern that some enchantment of the Black family would not allow Harry to inherit, because he was not a Black. Dumbledore summoned Kreacher to see if he was compelled, by the magic that binds house elves, to do as Harry instructed. When a reluctant Kreacher obeyed Harry's order to "shut up", Dumbledore knew that Harry's ownership was official.

At Dumbledore's suggestion, Harry sent Kreacher to Hogwarts, where someone could keep an eye on him.
4. What are Inferi?

Answer: animated bodies of dead people

The leaflet sent out by the Ministry of Magic mentioned that there was a possibility that Death Eaters were using Inferi (Inferius in the singular), without mentioning what they were, so Harry asked Dumbledore. Dumbledore explained that they were "Dead bodies that have been bewitched to do a Dark Wizard's bidding." When Harry went with Dumbledore to retrieve the Horcrux from the cave, they encountered Inferi as part of the defenses that Voldemort had established.
5. When Harry was at The Burrow, the results of their O.W.L.S. arrived. What two O.W.L.S. did Harry not pass?

Answer: Divination and History of Magic

Harry received Exceeds Expectations marks in Care of Magical Creatures, Charms, Herbology, Potions and Transfiguration. He received an Acceptable mark in Astronomy and an Outstanding in Defense Against the Dark Arts. Since he never really expected to pass either Divination or History of Magic, the only disappointment was his Potions mark, and that was only because he needed N.E.W.T. level Potions to be an Auror.

The previous year Snape had said that he would not accept anyone into his N.E.W.T. level course who had received anything less than an Outstanding in Potions.
6. Who did Harry suspect of recently becoming a Death Eater?

Answer: Draco Malfoy

When they were getting their school supplies in Diagon Alley, they saw Draco escaping from his mother and heading down Knockturn Alley. Using the invisibility cloak they followed him and determined that Draco was up to something, but could not figure out exactly what. Back at Hogwarts, Harry continued to obsess about Draco's behaviour. Remembering Draco's reaction when Madam Malkin, while fitting him for a robe, touched his left sleeve, Harry believed that Draco was hiding the Dark Mark. We never found out whether Harry was right, or not.
7. Why was Hagrid upset with Harry, Hermione and Ron?

Answer: None of them was taking Care of Magical Creatures in that year.

After Quidditch try-outs, they went down to visit Hagrid, stopping to spend some time with Buckbeak first. Hagrid came around the side of his house, saw them and then went inside, slamming the door behind him. He eventually forgave them, after they explained that they wanted to continue taking his subject, but couldn't fit it into their schedules.

It turned out that he was on edge anyway, because of Aragog's impending demise.
8. During the first visit to Hogsmeade, they met up with Mundungus Fletcher, a member of the Order of the Phoenix. What was he selling that upset Harry?

Answer: Black family items

Harry, Ron and Hermione saw Mundungus selling something out of a suitcase to the barman from the Hog's Head pub. When Mundungus' suitcase spilled, Harry recognized the Black family crest on one of the silver goblets. Harry correctly assumed that Mundungus had pilfered this stuff from the house on Grimmauld Place, which made it part of Harry's inheritance.
9. Which Weasley did Harry save from death by poison in "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince"?

Answer: Ron

When Ron drank a glass of poisoned mead, poured from a bottle that was most likely intended for Dumbledore, Ron collapsed and appeared to be choking (among many other symptoms). Harry had the presence of mind to shove a bezoar down Ron's throat, thereby saving his life.

When visiting Ron in the school hospital, Mr. and Mrs. Weasley pointed out that this is the third Weasley life that Harry had saved. He saved Ginny from the Chamber of Secrets (in the book of the same name), and Arthur from a snake bite in "The Order of the Phoenix".
10. While recovering from the poison, Ron had to miss a Quidditch game against Hufflepuff, and Harry had to replace him with McLaggen. What injury did Harry receive, as a direct result of McLaggen's actions?

Answer: a cracked skull

McLaggen believed himself to be a better Quidditch player than everyone else, and took it upon himself to tell the other players how to play. During the middle of the game McLaggen, who was playing Keeper, was showing one of the Beaters how to hit the Bludger, and ended up hitting Harry hard enough to fracture his skull.

He awoke in the hospital wing in a bed next to Ron, to find that they had, of course, lost the game.
11. Where did Harry kiss Ginny for the first time?

Answer: in the Gryffindor common room

Due to a detention with Snape, Harry had to miss the final Quidditch match of the season, and Ginny had to play Seeker. Afterwards, when Harry walked into the Gryffindor common room, he found that they had not only won the game, but had succeeded in winning the Quidditch cup. Ginny threw her arms around Harry, and, without thinking, he kissed her, in front of fifty odd people.
12. When Harry and Dumbledore went to find and destroy another one of Voldemort's Horcruxes, they encountered a sealed archway in the wall of the cave. What payment did they have to give the rock, in order to be allowed to pass?

Answer: blood

Using a silver knife, Dumbledore cut himself and splattered his blood on the rock. After this the rock, that was barring their way, seemed to melt away, giving them entrance into the cave beyond. Here they found the lake that contained the Inferi. Harry offered to use his blood instead, but Dumbledore refused his offer, saying that Harry's blood was worth more than his.
13. At the beginning of the book we learned that Draco had been set a dangerous task by Voldemort, but it is not until near the end of the book that we learned what that task was. What was it?

Answer: killing Dumbledore

Although Draco spent a great deal of time repairing the vanishing cupboard, so that the Death Eaters could gain access to Hogwarts from its twin (located in Borgin and Burkes), this was only to provide him backup to assist him in completing his task. Although Draco had had the gumption to send the cursed amulet with Katie Bell and to poison the bottle of mead intended for Dumbledore, he found himself unable to kill Dumbledore face to face. Aware that this might happen, Voldemort had arranged for Snape to do the deed if Malfoy failed.
14. Dumbledore's death freed Harry from the immobilisation spell that Dumbledore had placed on him. Harry then went off after Snape, to try and avenge Dumbledore's death. Harry caught up with Snape and the other Death Eaters near the gates, trying to reach a point where they could apparate. What did Harry call Snape that upset him so badly?

Answer: coward

Every time Harry called Snape a coward, Snape got very angry and yelled at Harry, taunting him with lies about his father's cowardice. Snape attempted to hurt Harry, but prevented other Death Eater from using an unforgiveable curse against Harry, because of the Dark Lord's orders.

This is when Snape revealed that he was the Half-Blood Prince, and that it was his Potions book that Harry had been using all year.
15. While quite upset about Dumbledore's death, Harry took comfort in knowing that Dumbledore had at least destroyed one of the pieces of Voldemort's soul (in the locket) just before dying.

Answer: False

As Harry knelt beside Dumbledore's body, he realized that he was kneeling on the locket that he and Dumbledore had retrieved that night, at the expense of a great drain on Dumbledore's energy. Having seen the real locket in the Pensieve, Harry was surprised to find that this locket was not the same one.

He found a paper inside the locket, which revealed that someone had already taken the real Horcrux, and left this locket in its place. It infuriated Harry to think that Dumbledore had drained his energy to retrieve this fake, because that energy might have given him the strength to survive the attempt on his life.
