Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the new word Dudley had learned on the day the story begins?

Answer: Shan't

Dudley was the one-year-old son of Vernon and Petunia Dursley. He was a rather pampered boy and Mr and Mrs Dursley loved him very much. They thought that he was the finest boy there could ever be.
2. Why was Harry Potter called the "Boy Who Lived"?

Answer: he had survived the killing curse

Harry Potter was famous as 'the boy who lived' in the wizarding world because he was able to survive the killing curse. No one had ever been spared when the killing curse had been used on them. Harry Potter was the first person to survive the killing curse in the history of magic.

The wizarding world believed that after being unable to kill Harry Potter, Voldemort (sorry, you-know-who) became powerless and vanished. After all the torture and suffering, the wizarding world was extremely happy to have finally gotten rid of Voldemort.
3. What was the name of the goblin that escorted Harry to his vault in Gringotts?

Answer: Griphook

Goblins guarded and took care of the wizarding bank, Gringotts. There were hundreds of goblins in Gringotts. Hagrid referred to Gringotts as the safest place there could ever be, except Hogwarts.

Griphook was the name of the goblin who had escorted Harry to his vault. Dobby and Kreacher are house-elves who we meet in the other Harry Potter books.
4. How did the Dursleys tell Harry that his parents died?

Answer: in a car crash

Harry's parents had died when he was very young in order to save him from Voldemort. Harry's only remaining family were the Dursleys and Harry was left with them. The Dursleys had told Harry that his parents had died in a car crash and that was how he had gotten his scar. The Dursleys had forbidden Harry from talking about his parents to them.
5. Which house was Susan Bones sorted into?

Answer: Hufflepuff

There were four houses in Hogwarts: Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Slytherin. The first years were sorted into their houses as soon as they arrived at Hogwarts in the first day feast. The Sorting Hat was used to sort students to their respective houses.
6. Who was the captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team?

Answer: Oliver Wood

Quidditch was a wizarding game, much like football in the muggle world, except it was played in broomsticks and had seven players and four balls. It was very famous in the wizarding world, including at Hogwarts.

In Hogwarts, the four houses fought for the Quidditch cup. Oliver Wood was the captain of the Griffindor Quidditch team. Katie Bell and Angelina Johnson were in the team too, they played chasers. Marcus Flint was the captain of the Slytherin Quidditch team.
7. Who among these were the two chasers of the Gryffindor Quidditch team?

Answer: Katie Bell and Angelina Johnson

Out of the seven players in a team, there were three chasers, two beaters, one keeper and a seeker. Harry Potter played seeker in the Gryffindor Quidditch team. He was the youngest player in a century. First years were usually not allowed to be in the Quidditch team. George and Fred Weasley played beaters in the Gryffindor Quidditch team and Oliver Wood was the keeper and the captain.
8. What gift, that once belonged to his father, did Harry receive from someone anonymous at Christmas?

Answer: invisibility cloak

Harry got quite some presents that year. He got a flute from Hagrid, a fifty pence piece from his uncle and aunt, a large box of chocolate frogs from Hermione, a jumper from Mrs Weasley and an invisibility cloak. It was not signed, but had a note saying that it had belonged to his father and it was time it was returned back to him. The note also said 'Use it well'.
9. Who was the person who had actually been after the Philosopher's stone?

Answer: Quirrell

Quirrell was the one who had actually been after the Philosopher's Stone, although Harry had always suspected it to be Snape. Quirrell was doing all of this on the orders of Voldemort, who was hidden behind Quirrell's turban. Voldemort had become a parasite and hoped that the Philosopher's Stone would enable him to come back to life. Voldemort was unable to get the stone and got confused when confronted with the Mirror of Erised.

When Harry saw the mirror, he felt the stone fall to his pocket (later, Dumbledore told Harry that only the person who wanted to find the stone but not use it would be able to get it). Voldemort tried to persuade Harry to give the stone to him, but Harry did not get persuaded and kept on fighting till the very end. He was successful in protecting the stone from Voldemort's despicable hands.
10. Which house won the House Cup in the end?

Answer: Gryffindor

Gryffindor won the House Cup in the end after Dumbledore added some final points. He gave 50 points to Ron for the best game of chess Hogwarts had seen in many years, 50 points to Hermione for the use of good logic in a difficult situation, 60 points to Harry for his courage and bravery and finally, 10 points to Neville for the courage to stand up to his friends.
