Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What kind(texture) of hair grows on Mr Twit's face?

Answer: bristles, like a nail brush

Mr Twit, a foul and bad tempered old man, is continually described with food, animals and unidentifiable objects lodged in his feral and unkempt beard. Dahl's great talent for describing the unsavory is particularly noticed in "The Twits"
2. Why is Mrs Twit so ugly?

Answer: her evil thoughts manifested into her appearance

Through the character of Mrs Twit, Dahl has suceeded in creating a character that every child has known, or experienced the wrath of. Her evil natured face, her grumpy eyes and sour mouth are all parts of the old lady every child has known that lives down the road, in a dark house, usually with lots of cats!
3. Who are the Mugglewumps?

Answer: four circus monkeys

Sweetly, perhaps even poignantly (not a word used to describe Dahl very often) these "muggle wumps" are the tortured prisoners of the twits. Once famous performers, Mr and Mrs Twit force the animals to perform for them upside down, an act that causes great illness to the family, as dizziness is not a nice experience!
4. What is the name of the beastly glue which Mr Twit brushes on the tree to catch birds for his birdy pie?

Answer: Hugtight sticky glue

Perhaps an excerpt from some gruesome local tale, Quentin Blake's illustrations bring to graphic life the nature of these murdered birds, trapped on the Twits tree in a laughably horrid light.
5. What is the tree's name?

Answer: Big dead tree

Again, Dahl's idiosyncratic writing and personality echoes through the Spartan name and nature of this tree, leaving plenty of room for young minds to imagine and conjure their own ideas without feeling trapped in a description of depth and exactness.
6. Who is the Roly Poly and what language does he speak?

Answer: a beautiful coloured bird, English

A typical show pony/bird, the Roly Poly Bird helps to devise a plan to rid the Mugglewumps of the horrendous Twits.
7. What is the first nasty trick Mr Twit plays on Mrs Twit?

Answer: a frog in her bed

Married, for reasons unknown as they do not seem to enjoy each others company, the Twits play constant pranks and nasty tricks on each other, both as stubborn and stupid as the last.
8. What does Mr Twit convince Mrs Twit to do so she shall stop shrinking?

Answer: stretch herself with balloons

Another example of the idiotic but strangely lovable (because they are so hopelessly foul and moronic) Twit pranks that are littered throughout the novel.
9. What is the brilliant idea of a Mugglewump to get Mr and Mrs Twit back for their nasty behaviour?

Answer: glue all the furniture up onto the roof

As a child, this section fascinated me. I imagined the most spectacular living room on the ceiling, and the Twits slowly shrinking into their necks, an image that never fails to make me laugh out loud!
10. How do the ravens side track the Twits?

Answer: they smear the horrid twits with hugtight sticky glue

A comic, amusingly faecal scene -" some beastly bird has dropped his dirty droppings on my head!"-that no doubt causes children all over to laugh at
