Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Lewis says to Cleo, "I want you to think of that flask as _________. Okay, it's poisonous, it's dangerous, and it's liable to do an awful lot of damage to you if you stay in contact with it." (Fill in the blank.)

Answer: plutonium

Cleo replied, "You're exaggerating, because it's just water from here."

Has Cleo forgotten that in the previous episode, the water tentacle snatched Bella from Cleo's back yard, and in the moon pool was turning her into water? Undoubtedly this is why Lewis is so insistent on throwing it back. And Cleo had a nightmare that she herself was taken by the tentacle.

Even Rikki did not share her enthusiasm, having been the victim in the first episode of the season.
2. Why did Cleo kick Lewis?

Answer: He was relucant to go golfing

Kim was sleeping over at the neighbour's house, and would be busy all the next day. When her dad's weekly golf buddy had to cancel, Cleo saw the perfect opportunity to keep Lewis busy for a few hours. So she volunteered him, and when he hesitated, she kicked him into agreeing to go.
3. Rikki was left alone in the bedroom with the floating water orb, while Cleo went to get what?

Answer: An eyedropper

And left alone, Rikki flash boiled it into lots of little orbs. And then again into steam. But it didn't take long for the steam to condense and drip into the aquarium.

Rikki was going to vapourize the water in an earlier episode, and Cleo stopped her.

It's interesting, isn't it, that Rikki started the whole thing by taking Zane's spark plug. Then Zane played upon Cleo's naivety to push her offshore in the disabled Zodiac, forgetting or not knowing that she couldn't swim. Then Rikki jumped onto the boat with the missing spark plug and repaired the motor. And then after picking up Emma, Rikki took them miles off shore. And when they ran out of gas, Rikki suggested rowing to Mako Island.

Cleo: What did you do?
Rikki: Well, it was your idea.
Cleo: Yes, but not like *that*.
4. When Don asked Lewis, "Are you sure you haven't played before?", how did Lewis reply?

Answer: "No, this is definitely my first time."

The subplot of "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" is that incredible golf game between Lewis and Cleo's dad. If that really was Lewis' first time golfing, he was clearly a gifted champion. There is no explanation given anywhere as to Lewis' incredible ability with golf.

And if you are playing golf with your girlfriend's dad, there is something to be said about making his day.
5. What reason did Cleo give Will as to why she was wearing a rain coat... indoors?

Answer: "Well, it might rain."

Will: Why are you wearing a raincoat?
Cleo: Well, it might rain.
Will: Indoors?
Cleo: Okay! That.. that.. that *is* unlikely.

This is the last episode for Will to have never yet seen a mermaid. And this is one of some very funny, tense awkward moments.
6. "Is everything all right? I heard a scream." Where was the water orb during this tense moment, with Will standing just outside the bedroom?

Answer: Above the doorway

And Cleo and Rikki, raincoat-clad and with Rikki holding a salad bowl and lid, just froze in the doorway. And that silly water orb hung just above the inside of the doorway, almost out of Will's sight. Cleo was afraid that if Will looked up he might see it, or the orb could just dip down and float out the door into the hallway at any moment.

For a tense moment, Cleo and Rikki stood there, trying to look pretty while they desperately tried to think of something. And Bella walked in at just the right moment.

Bella: Guys? Sorry I'm late.
Rikki: Bella!
Cleo: Bella! (To Will) Hey, um, can you go downstairs and tell Bella to come upstairs please?
Rikki: Yeah, you do that...quickly!

Will leaves, and then suddenly looks back. And Rikki manages an innocent, pretty smile.
7. The plug was "out".

Answer: True

Rikki finally captured the water orb in the bathtub. But it worked its way to the drain under the salad bowl, and indeed, the plug was "out".
8. Who had the only mermaid transformation, and how?

Answer: Rikki got splashed in the face from the kitchen faucet

Cleo accidentally turned the kitchen faucet on full, splashing Rikki in the face. This transformed Rikki in less than 3 seconds. Interestingly, Rikki once lasted a full 25 seconds after getting drenched.

"You could have 'tried' to catch me."

Cleo falling in the tub is a well-known blooper from this episode. Bella fell in the drink after peering in the window at Will's house, but that was a different episode. Rikki showed up at Cleo's house without a rain coat, since she thought it "might not" rain. Amazingly, no one got wet from the water orb itself.
9. Who said to Will, "Wow! You are so strong"?

Answer: Rikki

The water orb found its way outside. Fortunately, Bella was the one who saw it first. To pull Will away from the scene, Rikki claimed that the kitchen tap was stuck. When Will opened it, Rikki had to say something, so she acted like he had fixed it, being amazed that he was so strong. Then she quickly shoved him to the front door.

That's twice in this episode Rikki played cute with Will to keep him distracted. She teased him with her pretty face to keep him from seeing the water orb at Cleo's bedroom door, and here she risked a bit of foolishness to buy a precious moment to get Will out of the backyard.

An interesting type of relationship would develop between Rikki and Will. For in 3.12 "Crime and Punishment", Will would be involved in rescuing Rikki, and in 3.14 "Mermaid Magic", Rikki would save his life. Will would love Rikki, not romantically, but more like a favourite sister he didn't have in Sophie.
10. What was the name of the fish?

Answer: Hector

Poor Hector also got the coral poisoning that Emma was exposed to, and had to be the test subject for Laurie's anti-toxin.

Pluto was the fish that died in 1.09 "Dangerous Waters". At the end of that episode, Cleo had a new fish that she named "Hot Stuff" in honour of Rikki.

There was no fish called Eddy. But a fisherman named Eddie was fired by Cleo's dad in 1.03 "Catch of the Day".
