The first thing Cleo says is Emma's name.

We are introduced to Cleo by Zane, who is also the first one to say "please". Zane is also the first male character to be seen.

The boyfriends are introduced in reverse order from the mermaids. Zane is first with Rikki last; Lewis and Cleo are in the middle; Byron first appears in the second episode, while Emma is the first one seen.

The first two words out of Rikki's mouth are Zane's first and last name. This makes Zane the first character for whom we know a surname. The last two words spoken by Rikki in Season 3 are to Zane: "except you."

Emma: Mako Island? Forget it.
Cleo: No-one goes there. It's surrounded by sharks, and reefs, and mangroves.

Technically, Rikki was the first to identify it, but Emma stated the name.

The statements by Emma and Cleo establish the fact that Mako Island is a forbidden wilderness. In the storyline, it is a national park.

The shark presence was also stated by Harrison Bennett and Max Hamilton. Rikki and Zane were the first to see the sharks first-hand.

Rikki: [mocking] "Do you know anything about mermaids?"

Rikki's mocking of Cleo there with her blue eyes looking upward, has to be my favourite line in the first episode!

Cleo was the first to discover mermaid powers, turning the fire hydrant on Zane. It is Cleo first, then Emma, and then Rikki. This also matches the order in which their families are revealed, and the order in which they run out from the rocks in the opening title scene.

Tricky tricky. For this quiz we have been following the first episode chronologically. In thinking of a last question, I was thinking of Cleo saying "I tell mum everything." And then I remembered that Rikki was the first to mention her mother, which is interesting because she doesn't have a mother.

Even by the end of season 3, Rikki has only mentioned "mother" twice, here and the second time sarcastically to Emma in "Young Love". So it was to Emma both times. There was a third mention, which came from her dad, who oddly enough didn't even come to her graduation. Poor girl.
