Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This Russian lake is the world's deepest and oldest.

Answer: Lake Baikal

In addition to being the world's deepest and oldest lake, it is also the world's largest freshwater lake in terms of volume (amount of water it contains). Lake Baikal is home to a very large variety of plants and animals, including the Baikal seal and the Vega gull. Because of its ecological importance, Lake Baikal became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
2. This lake in Northern Ireland is the largest by area in the British Isles.

Answer: Lough Neagh

Lough Neagh is a major source of drinking water for Northern Ireland, but it also offers recreational activities. It is a popular spot for birdwatching due to the wide variety of birds that visit the boglands around the lough (the Irish word for lake). Fishing is also popular on the lake, and eel fishing is one of the lake's major industries.
3. Also known as Lake Nyasa, this African lake has the most species of fish of any lake in the world.

Answer: Lake Malawi

Lake Malawi is located between Tanzania, Malawi, and Mozambique, and its name varies in the different countries. In Tanzania, it is known as Lake Nyasa, but in Mozambique, it is called Lake Niassa. Cichlids are a type of fish that is popular in pet stores and fish tanks. Lake Malawi has over 700 species of cichlids, but some sources say that there are as many as 1,000 species of cichlids in the lake!
4. This African lake separates the countries of Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Answer: Lake Tanganyika

Lake Tanganyika is the second oldest and second deepest freshwater lake in the world, following Russia's Lake Baikal. Burundi, Zambia, Tanzania and the Congo all have access to the lake, but the lake forms the border between Tanzania and the Congo. Fishing is a major industry on the lake, and, like Lake Malawi, Lake Tanganyika is home to many species of cichlids.
5. This American lake is the largest of the Great Lakes.

Answer: Lake Superior

Lake Superior is one of the five Great Lakes located on the border between the US and Canada. Not only is it the largest of the Great Lakes, but it is the world's largest freshwater lake in terms of surface area. Because of its size, the native Ojibwe people called the lake 'Gichigami', roughly meaning 'great sea'.

The lake has many scenic areas on its islands and around its shores, including Sleeping Giant, a mesa formation in Ontario, Canada.
6. Scotland's largest lake is this lake with many islands.

Answer: Loch Lomond

'Loch' is the Scottish word for 'lake'. Loch Lomond offers a variety of water sports, including canoeing, wakeboarding, kayaking, and wake surfing. It is part of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. Many of its islands and much of its shoreline have some type of special protection status because of its importance to many animal species in the area.

"The Bonnie Banks o' Loch Lomond" is a traditional Scottish song that mentions the loch. Its exact origins are unknown, but the chorus goes as follows:

"Oh, ye'll tak the high road, and I'll tak the low road,
And I'll be in Scotland afore ye;
But me and my true love will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond."
7. This African lake is named after a British queen.

Answer: Lake Victoria

The British explorer, John Hanning Speke, found the lake in 1858 and named it after Queen Victoria, who was the ruler of the United Kingdom at the time. Like the other Great African Lakes, Lake Victoria is home to many species of fish, especially cichlids. Only Lake Malawi has more species than Lake Victoria.

In addition to fish, Lake Victoria is also home to other animals, like otters, crocodiles, hippos, and turtles. Lake Victoria is troubled by several environmental problems, including pollution and the invasion of non-native species.
8. This lake is the largest lake entirely in Canada.

Answer: Great Bear Lake

The lake sits on the Arctic Circle in Canada's Northwest Territories. It gets its name from the native Chipewyan word 'satudene', meaning 'grizzly bear water people'. Because of its location, it is frozen over for much of the year. The best time to visit the lake is in July and August, and it is a great place to fish, hunt, or just view the beautiful nature and wildlife.
9. The highest commercially navigable lake in the world is this South American lake.

Answer: Lake Titicaca

Lake Titicaca is in the Andes mountains between Bolivia and Peru. The Uros people live on the lake on many small 'floating islands' that they make from reeds. They build their houses on top of these man-made islands, and each island usually belongs to one extended family.

The lake also has several large natural islands inhabited by other native groups. The island Isla del Sol has ruins from the Inca civilization.
10. Legend says there may be a monster lurking in this famous Scottish lake.

Answer: Loch Ness

Loch Ness is located in the Scottish Highlands. It is not the largest loch in Scotland, but it is perhaps the most well-known due to its fame as the home of the Loch Ness Monster, or 'Nessie'. During certain parts of the year, visitors can take cruises on Loch Ness to see Urquhart Castle and explore the depths of the loch with the onboard sonar equipment.
