Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 2004, Mark Cline utilized a unique material to create an exact replica of Stonehenge. Which replica, originally in Natural Bridge, VA, was moved just a few hours away to Centreville, VA, in 2017?

Answer: Foamhenge

Mark Cline, a sculptor, got the idea for making Foamhenge when he visited a place that made huge blocks of styrofoam. While constructing Foamhenge, Mark took care to add the details that would make the styrofoam replica look exactly like the real Stonehenge. Foamhenge was originally located in Natural Bridge, Virginia, but had to be moved in 2016 when Natural Bridge was made into a state park.

After spending some time in storage, Foamhenge was relocated to Cox Farms in Centreville in 2017.
2. Which quirky example of a Stonehenge replica, located in Alliance, Nebraska, was initially rejected by residents, but was eventually recognized as a point of pride for the town?

Answer: Carhenge

Carhenge was constructed by Jim Reinders in 1987 as a memorial to his father. Initially, the local residents didn't like it and the Nebraska Department of Highways considered it a junkyard and wanted a fence built around it. Eventually, it became accepted by the residents, and signs were put up to proclaim Alliance as the "Home to Carhenge", as well as postcards made available for purchase by tourists. Carhenge is made entirely of American-made cars painted gray to make them look more like the real Stonehenge.
3. Fiberglass sculptor, Mark Cline, was commissioned by George Barber to build which Stonehenge replica in Elberta, Alabama, as a full-size exact replica of the original Stonehenge?

Answer: Bamahenge

Barber had some of Cline's fiberglass dinosaur sculptures, and, in 2006, while Cline was repairing them after a hurricane, Barber approached him about the idea of building a Stonehenge replica out of fiberglass. Just like he did for Foamhenge, Cline made sure to make Bamahenge as close to exact as possible. Bamahenge is actually aligned with the summer solstice.
4. Makomanai Takino Memorial Cemetery in Hokkaido, Japan is home to an amazing, but not quite exact, replica of Stonehenge. Which very important religious figure can be found in its center?

Answer: Buddha

Although it functions as a cemetery, Makomanai Takino Memorial Cemetery is also a tourist destination for sightseeing. Among other things, it has a replica of Stonehenge, made of unevenly cut stone. It even includes features of the real Stonehenge, including the bank, the ditch, and the bluestones.

Not only is there a small shrine to Buddha inside the Stonehenge replica, but there is also a very large Buddha statue nearby.
5. In which country can you admire a not quite exact replica of Stonehenge before gazing at the stars at the adjoining National Planetarium in its Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur province?

Answer: Malaysia

Outside the Planetarium Negara in the Ancient Observatory Park is a replica of Stonehenge. Though it is lacking in the way of accuracy and its stones are not made of real stone, it was definitely inspired by the real Stonehenge. The planetarium and park also offer walking trails and a sundial, in addition to several observatories and a picnic area.
6. In Ireland, Joe McNamara built an inexact Stonehenge replica out of concrete. What did locals quickly dub this controversial structure, which risked being razed since it was built without permission?

Answer: Achill Henge

Joe McNamara built Achill Henge on Achill Island in November 2011 over the course of a weekend, without any type of building permit or permission. The Mayo County Council originally sought to have the structure removed since McNamara had built it without permission, but McNamara argued that it didn't have to obey the planning rules since it was an "ornamental garden".
7. Which exciting theme park in Shenzhen, China has tiny versions of famous buildings and structures, including the Taj Mahal, Angkor Wat, Piazza San Marco, the Al-Hakim Mosque, and Stonehenge?

Answer: Window of the World

The theme park is divided into different areas based on world regions. The Europe region includes such attractions as the Eiffel Tower, the Colosseum, the Piazza San Marco, and Stonehenge. The park's Stonehenge replica, apart from being a miniature representation, is fairly accurate and made to resemble the real Stonehenge.
8. Built by the Phoenix Astronomical Society, which Stonehenge replica, located in the Wairarapa region of New Zealand, has an obelisk at its center?

Answer: Stonehenge Aotearoa

This Stonehenge replica wasn't designed to be an exact replica. The Phoenix Astronomical Society sought to make a modern version of Stonehenge. Instead of being made of stone, the pillars are hollow structures surrounded by concrete. While based on Stonehenge, the builders of Stonehenge Aotearoa also took inspiration from different astronomical and nautical techniques from Polynesia and the New World.

The site offers tours and lectures as well as hosting other events, like solstice and music events.
9. Built by Frederick West in the 19th century, Quinta Circle is a Stonehenge-like folly located near the Welsh border in which English county?

Answer: Shropshire

Located in the park outside the Quinta (now used as a Christian Conference Centre), the Quinta Circle was built sometime around 1830 or 1840 by the then owner of Quinta House, Frederick West. While some early sources claimed the circle was supposed to have been an exact replica, it is not extremely accurate and was made at about half scale of the original.

Some sites also refer to the Quinta Circle as "The Temple".
10. Oddly enough, many Stonehenge replicas, such as the Takino Stonehenge and Stonehenge II in Texas, are accompanied by which famous figures?

Answer: Moai statues

There are many Stonehenge replicas that are accompanied by moai statues. Some of them include the Stonehenge at Makomanai Takino Memorial Cemetery in Hokkaido, Stonehenge II in Ingram, Texas, and the replica at Raven Hill Discovery Center in Michigan.

Just like Stonehenge, moai statues, also called the Easter Island heads, are a source of curiosity. The moai statues are thought to have been carved between 1250 and 1500 CE. Like Stonehenge, their purpose and meaning are unknown, but some archaeologists believe that they represent religious and political power.
