Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is this book dedicated to?

Answer: Sam And Gilly

This is an excellent book by Robert Munsch with beautiful illustrations by Sheila McGraw. It was published in 1986 and has been reprinted many, many times. This book tells the heartwarming story of a mother who cares very much for her son, and always makes sure that he knows that he is loved although he can sometimes be a handful.
2. How many major characters are in this book?

Answer: Two

In this book, the only major characters are the baby and his mother. The book says that the mother recites a beautiful poem to her son. "I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always, as long as I'm living, by baby you'll be."
3. Which of these does the little boy NOT do?

Answer: Put lotion on his hair

The little boy did things that a normal toddler would do, although his mother gets very frustrated by the way he acts. His mother says, as I am sure most moms have said at one time or another, "This kid is driving me crazy!"
4. When the toddler grows to be a nine year old boy, what does he do when his Grandma comes to visit?

Answer: He says bad words

All of these things happen, but only one is specified to happen when his Grandma visits. The nine year old boy once again makes his mother frustrated, although she still comes into his room and rocks him while reciting her poem.
5. Also when the boy is nine, what does his mom want to sell him to?

Answer: The zoo

This is a threat that I am very familiar with. The mother in the story wants to sell her son to the zoo due to the way he acts. Although the mother tells the nine year old boy that she is going to sell him to the zoo, she, of course, does not mean it.
6. When the boy turns into a teenager, the book talks about strange things that he says or does. Out of these things, which was not mentioned to be strange about the teenager?

Answer: His hair

In the part of the book that tells about the boy being a teenager, we are told that he listens to strange music, has strange friends, and wears strange clothes. We are not, however, told that there is anything unusual about his hair. All the strange new ways that her son is acting lead the mother to feel as if she lives in a zoo!
7. When the teenager grows up, becomes a grown-up man and moves out, where is his new house located?

Answer: Across town

When the man moves out, he gets a house across town. His mother misses him, but she will not be defeated by her son's move. On dark nights, she sometimes would tie a ladder to the roof of her car and drive to her son's house. If all the lights were out in her son's house, she would set up the ladder and climb through her son's window to recite the beautiful poem that she said to him since he was a newborn baby.
8. In the next section of the book, the grown-up man gets a call about his mother being old and sick. Who calls him?

Answer: His mother herself

In this heartbreaking section of this story, the reader learns that the grown-up man's mother is sick. She wants her son to come and visit her. Over the phone, the mother tried to recite her beautiful poem, but she is to old and sick to finish it.
9. When the grown-up man goes to visit his mother, he does something very nice for her. What does he do?

Answer: He recites the poem

When the son reaches the house that he grew up in, he sees that his mother is very weak. He knows that she cannot recite the poem to him, so he recites it to her. He rocks her back and forth while saying "I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always, as long as I'm living my Mommy you'll be."
10. When the grown-up son goes home, he recites the poem to someone else. Who does he recite the poem to?

Answer: His daughter

The grown-up man goes back to his home and goes upstairs into his daughter's room. He picks her and recites the poem to her, carrying on a tradition that will go on and on.
