Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Banana and canary
Answer: Yellow
Bananas are grown in hot countries, such as those in the Caribbean area, Central America and South America. They are usually green when unripe, but ripened bananas are most commonly yellow.
The canary is a small songbird belonging to the finch family, which is most often a bright yellow colour.
2. Amethyst and aubergine (eggplant)
Answer: Purple
The amethyst is a semi-precious stone, a type of quartz, which is used for jewellery. It can come in various shades of purple, from a pale lilac to a dark violet colour.
The eggplant, which is called an aubergine in the United Kingdom, produces a fruit with purple-coloured skin that is used in cooking. The plant is a relative of the potato and tomato.
3. Grass and frog
Answer: Green
Grass most often looks green, especially when it is kept watered either by rain or artificially. Many of us have lawns in our gardens.
Frogs can come in other colours, but I think most of us would draw a green one if we were asked to show someone what a frog looks like. Frogs can be found in countries all around the world, apart from in Antarctica.
4. Fire engine and raspberry
Answer: Red
Many countries have red fire engines, so that they can be seen easily and recognised immediately for what they are. If your house was on fire, you'd need the fire brigade to get there as quickly as possible.
Raspberries are a fruit which grow on canes in many countries around the world. Most raspberries are red, although some varieties do come in black, or dark purple, or even yellow.
5. Milk and polar bear
Answer: White
Milk is produced by many mammals, such as cows, goats, sheep and even humans, to feed their young. Cows, in particular, are kept to produce milk for human consumption and most of us buy it from our supermarkets. It is white in colour, until you add flavours, like strawberry or chocolate, which changes the taste and the way it looks.
Polar bears live in the northern countries of the world, such as Canada and other Arctic regions. Their fur looks white to us, because it is dense, although it is actually transparent.
6. Flamingo and pig
Answer: Pink
The flamingo is a long-legged bird which can be found in Africa and South America. The pink colour of their feathers is created by bacteria and pigments in their food - the richer the diet, the brighter the birds' plumage becomes.
Pigs can come in other colours, but the ones most of us are familiar with are pink. Their meat is called pork, and is also used to create sausages and bacon.
7. Crow and vinyl record
Answer: Black
The crow is a fairly large black bird belonging to the Corvidae family. This family also includes other black feathered birds like the raven, rook and jackdaw as well as more brightly coloured birds like the magpie or jay.
Vinyl records were the way most of us listened to music in the days before compact discs, iPods and MP3 players. They are round and made from a type of plastic. They are making something of a comeback in the twenty-first century.
8. Sapphire and jeans
Answer: Blue
Sapphire is a precious stone, the blue form of corundum - the red form is called a ruby. Sapphires are mined in several African and Asian countries. While most of them are blue, some can be found in other colours, such as yellow or pink.
The original blue jeans were made from denim and became popular among gold miners and cowboys who needed trousers (pants) which were tough enough to last in the conditions in which they worked. By the middle of the twentieth century, many teenagers were wearing jeans and most people have at least one pair in their wardrobe.
9. Marigold flower and tangerine
Answer: Orange
Marigolds are brightly coloured flowers which usually flower for only one year - they are called 'annuals' by gardeners. The come in shades from dark orange to dark yellow.
The tangerine gets its name from Tangiers, in Algeria. It is a type of citrus fruit and is related to the mandarin orange. Tangerines are often sweeter than the big oranges found in the shops and are easier to peel.
10. Chocolate and beaver
Answer: Brown
One of most people's favourites, chocolate is usually a shade of brown. The more cocoa it contains, the darker the colour.
The beaver is known for its skill in building dams and is the national animal of Canada. It has brown fur and a large, flat, hairless tail.
