Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 6+x=20 What is x?

Answer: 14

6+x=20, so x=20-6=14
This is an example of algebra. There will be more of a challenge in the next few questions.
2. I am thinking of a number. If I add 10, then take away 5, and divide by 2, I will get 40. What is the original number?

Answer: 75

75: add 10, subtract 5 and then divide 2, my answer is 40. Use inversion (work backwards using the operations given) for these types of questions!
3. Continue the sequence: 1, 4, 7, 10, 13...

Answer: 16

The sequence is: 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16. You add 3 each time. Or, if you want a more advanced thing, to work out the nth term in the sequence, the formula is, 3n-2.
4. If 2x+3=21, what is x?

Answer: 9

2x+3=21, so 2x=21-3=18 and therefore x=9. If a number is next to a variable (an unknown number, usually shown as x, a, n, etc...) then you have to multiply the variable by that number.
5. Continue the sequence: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8...

Answer: 13

The rule is that you add the last two numbers to get the next one. This is called the Fibonacci Sequence, after a famous mathematician named Fibonacci.
6. If I need some lemonade for a tea party, and I have 6 people coming and 300ml of lemonade, how much lemonade will be in each cup if I divide it evenly?

Answer: 50ml

300ml divided by 6 is 50ml. It doesn't matter what liquid it is, not even if it is Coke, or water! just remember to put your units at the end, like in this question, the units are ml.
7. If I have 9 apples, and my friend has 27 apples, what is the fraction of my apples out of the total number that we have together? Remember to simplify!

Answer: 1/4

9+27=36, so there are 36 apples altogether. The fraction of apples that I have is 1/4, or 9/36. 1/4 is the simplified version, though.
8. How many days are there in two years that are not leap years?

Answer: 730

There are 365 days in a year that isn't a leap year, so doubling it will get you 730. In a leap year, an extra day is added to February, to make the days in February 29, and the days in that year 366. But did you know that a leap year is taken off every four centuries?
9. What are the sizes of the interior angles (the angles on the inside) of an equilateral triangle?

Answer: 60 degrees

There are 180 degrees in a triangle, and a triangle has 3 sides. 180 divided by 3 is 60, so therefore, an equilateral triangle has angles of 60 degrees.
10. If have a bag of sweets and I eat three quarters of them, and I have 6 sweets left, how many did I start with?

Answer: 24

3/4 of 24 is 18. 24-18=6
To find 3/4 of something, you divide the total by 4, and multiply it by 3.
