Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the number 48103, each digit has a different place value. What is the value of the 8?

Answer: 8000

In expanded form, this number would be written as:-
4 x 10000 + 8 x 1000 + 1 x 100 + 0 x 10 + 3 x 1
2. Write 835 in expanded notation.

Answer: 8 x 100 + 3 x 10 + 5 x 1

Remember that whole numbers have one fewer zeroes than the place value.
So 800 has 2 zeroes and so on.
3. Write these numbers from smallest to greatest. 23 12 6 43 34

Answer: 6 12 23 34 43

It's always best to write the numbers down before trying it on a keyboard (just to be safe).
4. Which of the following numbers is a prime number? 23 33 63 93

Answer: 23

Prime numbers have only two different numbers that divide into them, called factors.
23 = 1 x 23 only
33 = 1 x 33 and 3 x 11, so is a composite number.
63 = 1 x 63, 3 x 21 and 7 x 9
93 = 1 x 93 and 3 x 31
5. Which of these numbers is a square number? 26 36 46 66

Answer: 36

Square numbers have a pair of factors the same, so because 36 can equal 6 x 6, it is a square number.
6. Number pattern: John was absent from school once in August, twice in September and three times in October. Should this pattern continue, how many days will he likely skip school in November?

Answer: 4 days

We are adding one day for each consecutive month.
7. Operation signs: Which sign makes the following number sentence TRUE? 24__6 = 18

Answer: - (minus)

24 - 6 + 18
24 + 6 = 30
24 * 6 = 144
24/6 = 4
8. How would you write 57 using Roman numerals?

Answer: LVII

In Roman numerals, I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500 and M = 1000.
These are the simple ones.
So 57 = 50 + 5 + 1 + 1, hence, L + V + I + I = LVII
9. Estimating and rounding: How would you estimate 284 to the nearest 10?

Answer: 280

A good way to remember how to round numbers is this: Four and below, let it go. Five and above, give it a shove.
This means that if the last digit is 0 - 4, just write 0. If it is 5 - 9, go up one.
For example, 234 becomes 230, but 235 becomes 240.
10. Order of Operations: What is the value of 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + (8 x 9)?

Answer: 100

When ordering operations, apply the PEMDAS rule (Parenthesis. Exponent. Multiply/Divide. Add/Subtract). This rule can be worded differently depending on where you went to school, but the rules are always the same.
Always do what's in parenthesis (brackets) first.
So we multiply (times) 8 by 9 (= 72), THEN add the other numbers.
72 + 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 = 100 (neat, huh?) :-)
