Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the probability of rolling 3 dice, and them all landing on a 6?

Answer: 1/216

Because there are 216 different combinations that 3 dice could land on, the probability is 1/216. There are 216 possible combinations because there are 6 combinations for 1 die ('die' is the singular name for 'dice') - 1 times 6, 36 combinations for 2 dice - 6 times 6, which means that the combinations for 3 dice are 6 times 6 times 6, or 6 cubed. 6 cubed is 216.
2. I have 18 blue marbles, 16 green marbles and 22 red marbles in a bag. What is the chance I will pick a green marble if I pick a marble out at random (simplify the answer)?

Answer: 2/7

You add up 18, 16 and 22, which gives you a total of 56. 16 of those 56 marbles are green, so we write it like this: 16/56. To simplify this, we could find the highest common factor of 16 and 56, which is 8, and divide 16 and 56 by 8 to get 2/7. We could also just keep halving 16 and 56 until we get to 2/7.
3. What is the probability you will get all 10 questions in this quiz correct if you narrow the options down so you have 2 answers to choose between, and 1 of them is correct?

Answer: 1/1024

The probability of you getting 1 question correct when there are 2 options to choose from 1/2, assuming 1 of those options is correct. . For 2 questions, getting them both correct is 1/4 or 1/2^2 so 10 questions would be 1/2^10 which is 1/1024.
4. A spinner has 3 green sides, 2 yellow sides, 4 red sides, 1 blue side and 3 orange sides, is it probable that I would NOT spin a yellow or a red side if I spun it at random?

Answer: Yes

All 'probable' means is that something is more likely than unlikely. There are 13 sides, which means it is either probable or improbable (because 13 is odd). There are 6 sides which are either yellow or red (2 yellow and 4 red) and this means there are 7/13 sides which are not yellow or red, and 7/13 is more than half so it is probable.
5. I draw 1 card from a standard 52-card pack of cards. All the cards had an equal chance of being picked. What is the chance I did NOT pick a face card?

Answer: 10/13

There are 12 face cards in a standard 52-pack of cards (4 jacks, 4 queens and 4 kings), so there is 12/52 (which can be simplified to 3/13) chance of picking a face card. This means there is a 40/52 (10/13) chance that I didn't pick a face card.
6. I have 3 cards. The mean of the cards is 6. The 1st card is a 3. The 2nd card is a 9. What is the 3rd card?

Answer: 6

To get the mean of a set of numbers, you add the numbers together, and divide by the number of numbers there are, in this case 3. The mean is 6, so that must mean the total of the cards is 18 because 18/3 ('/' means divided by) is 6. 3+9 is 12, so the last card is 6 because 12+6=18.

An easier way to work this out is to know that 3 is 3 less than the mean, and 9 is 3 more than the mean, so they balance each other out. This must mean the last number is the mean, which is 6.
7. I go to a pub. I notice my table number is 7. The cost of my starter is just under £9. The TV in the pub is showing a football match, and the match is 3 minutes into the second half. When I leave, I notice there are 22 people in the pub. What is the range of the numbers I noticed (7, 9, 3 and 22)?

Answer: 19

To get the range, you subtract the lowest number from the highest number; in this case you subtract 3 from 22, which leaves you with 19. 7.75 is the mean, 8 is the median, and there isn't a mode.
8. The time is 8pm. I am reading a book which was published in 1976. In a minute I will watch a programme on Channel 4. What is the median of all those digits (8, 1, 9, 7, 6 and 4)?

Answer: 6.5

To find out the median of a set of numbers, put the numbers in order, starting with the smallest. 1, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9 is the correct order. You then find the middle number. There are 6 numbers, so the middle is halfway between the third and the fourth numbers. Halfway between 6 and 7 is 6.5, so 6.5 is the median.
9. This is question 9 on this quiz. It is in Sci/Tech, which is the 16th category on FunTrivia alphabetically. There are 4 answer choices to this question, 1 of which is correct, and 3 of which or incorrect. What is the mode of those digits (9, 1, 6, 4, 1 and 3)?

Answer: 1

The mode is the number that appears the most. 1 appears 2 times, and all the other numbers appear 1 time. That makes 1 the mode. 4 is the mean, 3.5 is the median and 8 is the range.
10. Which of these sentences accurately define the word 'probability'?

Answer: How likely it is that a certain event will occur.

According to www.thefreedictionary.com, probability is defined as 'The quality or condition of being probable; likelihood.'. 'Statistics' refers to a branch of mathematics concerned with data, but not necessarily numerical data.
