Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what type of structure does Momo live?

Answer: amphitheatre

The amphitheatre is almost a ruin, left over from an ancient civilization, long since gone. Momo decides to live there and the people of the neighborhood help her fix-up a little room under the tiers, complete with an old bed, a little table and a picture painted on the wall.
2. What skill is Momo most noted for having?

Answer: listening

Everyone comes to Momo with their problems. All she does is listen and people leave feeling better, or having made a decision of some kind. Soon, the catch phrase, "Why not go see Momo?" is used whenever someone needs help. Momo is always there to listen.
3. Momo's two best friends are a street-sweeper and a story-teller. What are their names?

Answer: Beppo and Guido

Beppo is an older man who sweeps the streets of the city. He likes to talk to Momo, because she is patient enough to listen to what he has to say. Sometimes it takes him awhile because he always wants to tell the truth, and so he thinks carefully before speaking.
Guido tells fantastic stories about the town - always made up. He is known as Guido Guide. His best stories are the ones he tells Momo, usually about the two of them.
4. Creatures sneak into the town and trick people into "saving" time. What are these men called?

Answer: Men in Grey

The Men in Grey exist on stolen time. The roll it up and smoke it in their cigars. Without them, they cease to exist. So they must continue to steal time from people. They sneak around unnoticed and can erase any memory of meeting them from the minds of people.
5. Momo goes to Nowhere House and learns the true meaning of time from what man?

Answer: Professor Secundis Minutus Hora

Professor Hora is the guardian or keeper of time. It is he who releases time to the people of the world. He also collects clocks and has over a million different varieties and styles.
6. What do the Time Thieves decide to do in order to manipulate Momo into helping them steal all the time in the world?

Answer: Take away all of her friends.

Guido is easy, they help make him famous because of his stories. Soon he is extremely famous, but the Men in Grey control his life and he can't escape them. Beppo they trick into saving them his time to ransom Momo. Of course, they don't really have Momo, so it is a lie.

They convince parents that children need structure, so they force them into depots where they are "taken care of" and play "instructional" games and fun is not allowed.
7. What item must the Time Thieves have at all times in order to survive?

Answer: cigars

Their cigars are made from petals of stolen time-lilies. When stolen, a time-lily withers unless it is kept frozen. The Men in Grey roll up withered lily leaves to make their cigars. If they lose the cigar they are smoking, they dissolve into the nothing they really are.
8. When Momo returns after being away, she tries to find her friends. After waiting fruitlessly for awhile, where does she go to find her first friend?

Answer: Neno's

She has a letter from Guido telling her to go to Neno for food. When she goes, instead of finding a nice inn, there is a fast food restaurant where people stand to eat and hurry through their meals. She can barely get a few words with Neno because he is so busy serving customers as fast as possible.
9. What was Momo given before time stopped, so that she could stop the Time Thieves?

Answer: an hour-lily

Professor Hora can give her one hour while the rest of the world stops. In that time, she has to find the vault of the Men in Grey and release the stolen time so that time will start up again.
10. How did Momo get rid of the Time Thieves?

Answer: She deprived them of their stolen time by closing the door of the vault.

They actually destroyed many of themselves by losing their cigars, or stealing the cigars of their comrades. When only six remain, Momo uses the hour-lily to close the vault door. Deprived of their stores, they panic and try to get Momo. In the course of the chase, all of them lose their cigars and vanish into nothing. Only then does Momo re-open the vault and restore the stolen time to the world.
