Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first sport I'm watching involves competitors firing arrows at a fixed target from a long way away. Which sport is this?

Answer: Archery

Archery first appeared in the Olympics of 1900, and have appeared consecutively since 1972. Since 1972, South Korea and the United States have won the majority of the gold medals.
2. At the next event, I see people using long metal rods to soar high into the air to see who can go the highest. What am I watching now?

Answer: Pole vault

Pole vaulting is one of the sports that has been in the Games since the very beginning, being held at every modern Games since 1896. Up to and including the 2012 London Olympics, the United States had won as many medals in pole vaulting as every other nation combined in the men's competition, although Russia has been slightly more successful on the women's side.
3. In the next field over, I see some animals gallop past. Intrigued, I walk over and find out this is another competition, not just for fun. I'm watching "equestrian" now, but which animals are the competitors riding to win the gold medal?

Answer: Horses

Horses have been in the Olympics since 1912, and have been ridden by royalty along the way, such as Princess Anne in 1976. Just so you know, I don't think anyone would appreciate it if you rode any of the other choices...
4. It's become rather windy now, so I make my way inside, just in time to catch a match with two people attempting to poke each other with funny-looking swords. What name does this sport carry, which could sound like you're building a barrier around your house?

Answer: Fencing

Fencing is another sport that has been around since the very first modern Games in 1896. There are three types of fencing competitions - the Foil, Épée, and Sabre. Italy, France and Hungary have been the most successful countries over the years, earning at least 35 gold medals each.
5. In the next hall over, I try to catch a glimpse of another sport, but it's rather difficult as it's occurring in a very small area - it is a much smaller version of a different game after all. The use of racquets and balls is maintained though. What sport does this describe?

Answer: Table tennis

Table tennis (otherwise known as ping-pong) is a relatively new addition to the Olympic Games, having been introduced in 1988. China has won almost every gold medal since 1996 (the 2004 men's singles was won by a South Korean, the only exception).
6. I'm back outside now, and this time I'm watching some objects resembling flying saucers being thrown far into the air. What is the name of both the event and the object, which sound like you could be talking to someone about it?

Answer: Discus

This is another event largely dominated by the United States over the years. In the past, there have been variations of the discus event, including two handed events in 1912, and a stone throw in 1906 (the "Intercalated Games").
7. I'm beginning to feel quite warm, so I make my way to the pool. They won't let me into the pool though, because it's currently in use for a range of events. Which swimming style is NOT going to be on the schedule?

Answer: Doggy paddle

In addition to the three other options listed above, butterfly is also a style of swimming found in the Olympics. Doggy paddle races wouldn't be that exciting to watch anyway.
8. I notice another pool alongside the first one. It's not as big, but much deeper. It turns out this is quite necessary, as the athletes need it after leaping from great heights (but making as little splash as possible) in which sport?

Answer: Diving

Even though the other choices are usually played on land, all three of them have underwater versions - only water polo has made it to the Olympics as of yet, while 'land' rugby hasn't even been included since 1924; a variation utilizing 7 players on each team has been set for inclusion in 2016 however.
9. I step outside for a quick breath of fresh air, and almost get in the way of a few people cycling past. Someone tells me they're in the middle of a "triathlon" - how many different sports does a "triathlon" involve?

Answer: 3

The prefix 'tri-' means three (as in triple). The wrong answers refer to other Olympic competitions combining events: the pentathlon, heptathlon and decathlon.
10. Finally, just before I'm about to head home, I decide to watch one last sport. This one involves two people fighting while wearing big cushy gloves and attempting to knock each other over. Which sport is this, that also sounds like you might be getting a gift ready to give to a friend?

Answer: Boxing

Boxing remains one of the only two Olympic events (the other being wrestling) to require participants to maintain amateur status; that is, they can't make money from it beforehand as a professional would. Boxing has been an Olympic sport since 1904, but women have only been able to compete since 2012; until then, boxing was the only sport not to be open to both genders.
