Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's get the number out of the way. An odd number is one that cannot be equally divided by two. With that in mind which of the following words can also be used to describe an odd number?

Answer: Uneven

If you divide and odd number by two you won't end up with a whole number, you'll wind up with a fraction. For example; seven (7) divided by two (2) equals three and a half (3 1/2). Now the opposite of an odd number is an even number. If you wish to say the opposite of even in a different way you'd say uneven.
2. Something that is odd can mean that it is strange or different. Using another word for odd which statement below also says that something is strange?

Answer: That guy's weird.

Describing something as being weird is the same as saying that it is not normal, it's unusual or something that is not natural or regular. Ultimately, it is odd. All the other statements above describe things are as they should be.
3. If you're listening to the radio and you hear these four songs which one is NOT describing something that is odd?

Answer: Act Naturally

Peculiar, bizarre and strange are all words that describe something as being odd. To act naturally means that you are behaving in the way that society expects you to. Now if you get up each morning and go outside and pretend that you're a duck for an hour that may be something that you normally do but it is not normal behaviour. That's just plain odd behaviour.
4. Odd can describe something that is not used up or you don't have enough to make a set. Which statement below best uses odd in this manner?

Answer: I have an odd sock left over.

When you place items into sets and there are some bits left over, they're called odd bits. We described socks above. Let's say we took the washing off the line and had seven (7) socks. Socks go in a pair (that's two), which means we'll end up with three pairs of socks and one odd sock left over. The other three statements above all use odd to mean something is strange.
5. Something that is odd can also mean that it doesn't fit in or it is out of place with everything around it. Three of these phrases describe something odd in this way - which one doesn't?

Answer: A dime a dozen.

A square peg is an odd shape to try and squeeze into a round hole, it certainly wouldn't fit perfectly. The perfect fit for a fish is the ocean and an outsider is one that doesn't belong or fit into a group. A dime a dozen usually indicates that something is common or very easy to come by.
6. Even can mean having a horizontal or flat surface. Which of the following words best describes even in this manner?

Answer: Level

A level surface is a flat surface. Other words that can say the same thing are straight, smooth or true. A bumpy surface is like a rocky road, which is certainly not smooth. Seven is a number and dirty is just plain filthy.
7. In sport when scores are tied they can also be described as even. Which of the following scores below can be described as even?

Answer: London (3) vs Liverpool (3)

London and Liverpool each have a score of three (3) which means that they're even. Neither side is in front nor is either one behind. Apart from saying that their scores are even or tied we could also say that they're matched, their scores are drawn or that they're equal.
8. If someone does you wrong you may want to "get even" with them. Three of the songs below talk about getting even, which one is the odd one out?

Answer: Bridge Over Troubled Water

You may have heard the phrase "I'll get even with you if it's the last thing I do". That statement is all about getting revenge or vengeance, about making someone pay for something that they did wrong. Other phrases that mean the same thing are "an eye for an eye", "give tit for tat" or "you'll get yours". Rather appropriately, "Bridge Over Troubled Water" talks about calming things down.
9. Does the sentence "You don't owe me anything now" mean that we're even?

Answer: Yes

You may have borrowed some money from a friend and now you have paid that money back. There is no money owing between the two of you which means that you're both back to being even. You could also say that you're square or that you're now both on the same page.
10. If I said that Billy had an even temper, which of the following words could also be used to describe Billy?

Answer: Calm

Someone who is even-tempered is not usually irritated or upset. They're generally people who are well balanced emotionally, peaceful or composed. You know what to expect from them, unlike someone who is unpredictable. An agitated person is someone who is upset and likely to get angry. Someone who is emotional tends to let their feelings get away from them which means that they're not calm or even-tempered.
