Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the country that Carrie, and her younger brother Nick, are evacuated to at the beginning of the novel?

Answer: Wales

Carrie and Nick are sent from London to South Wales. They end up living with a strict man named Mr Evans, and his more lenient sister, Miss Evans.
2. What does Mr Evans' sister tell Carrie and Nick to call her instead of Miss Evans?

Answer: Auntie Lou

The children soon find out that Miss Evans is a lot nicer than her brother. On arriving at the house she immediately tells them to call her Auntie Lou, but reminds them to call her brother Mr Evans, as 'he's a Councillor'.
3. Does Mr Evans own a shop?

Answer: Yes

Mr Evans does indeed own a shop, and he sometimes let the children help out, 'measuring out things on the scales and giving the change'. However Nick was banned from helping out for a while, after he stole some biscuits.
4. What was the present Mr Evans gave Nick for his tenth birthday?

Answer: A Holy Bible

For Nick's tenth birthday, Auntie Lou gave him a pair of leather gloves and Mr Evans gave him a Bible with 'a soft, red cover and pictures inside'. Nick adored his gloves, but was disappointed with the Bible, as he had hoped to have one of the knives that Mr Evans had on special offer in his shop.
5. When Mr Evans sent the children to collect the Christmas goose from Druid's Bottom, who was it that scared them as they approached the cottage?

Answer: Mister Johnny

On their way to the cottage, Carrie and Nick were frightened by a 'queer, throaty, chuckling, gobbling sound'. It turned out to be Mister Johnny, who is described as being 'just a bit simpler than some' people.
6. Did Nick ever receive a knife as a gift?

Answer: Yes

Nick did finally receive the knife that he had been disappointed not to get for his birthday. Instead, it was given to him for Christmas, and it was Carrie who received a Bible.
7. Why does Mrs Gotobed wear grand dresses when she is ill in bed?

Answer: Because it cheers her up

When Carrie first meets Mrs Gotobed, she is wearing a 'red, silk ball gown, embroidered with silver flowers', which Carrie thinks is a very strange thing to be wearing in the daytime. Albert Sandwich later explains that Mrs Gotobed wears fancy dresses because it cheers her up.
8. Why does Mister Johnny stab Frederick with a pitchfork?

Answer: Because Frederick was making fun of him

Mister Johnny stabs Frederick with a pitchfork because he was making fun of him, 'twisting one side of his face' and 'fluttering his hands'.
9. Whom does Auntie Lou run away to marry?

Answer: Major Cass Harper

Auntie Lou falls in love with Major Cass Harper and knows that her brother will not let her marry him. Because of this she chooses to run away with him, leaving only a note behind for Mr Evans.
10. At the end of the novel, as Carrie and Nick are on the train home to their mother, what do they notice is on fire ?

Answer: Druid's Bottom

As Carrie and Nick are on the train, they notice that Druid's Bottom is on fire. Carrie is convinced that it is her fault because she threw the skull into the horse pond. Although she knows that deep down this isn't true, later on, as an adult, she admits that the memory of it still makes her cry.
