Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is a noun?

Answer: a naming word

If it is something you can draw or touch or carry, it is a noun. A noun is a name of something - an object, a place or a person.
2. Which is not a noun?

Answer: ran

Running is something you do, so it is not a noun. Boy, car and cat are all things you can see and touch.
3. What is the noun in this sentence - 'The horse is sleeping'.

Answer: horse

Horse is the noun - the names of animals are nouns. Sleeping tells us what the horse is doing, so it is a verb.
4. How many nouns are there in this sentence - 'Dolphins and sharks live in the sea'.

Answer: 3

The nouns are dolphins, sharks and sea. They are names of things that you can see although you might not want to touch a shark!
5. Which of these words is a noun?

Answer: lamp

A lamp is a kind of light, so it is an object. It is the noun.
6. What is a verb?

Answer: a doing word

Verbs are doing words. If it is something you can do, it is a verb.
7. Which of these words is not a verb?

Answer: girl

Girl is a noun, not a verb. The other words are all things that you can do.
8. What is the verb in this sentence - 'My friend runs very fast'.

Answer: runs

Friend is a noun. Runs is the verb because it tells us what my friend is doing.
9. How many verbs are there in this sentence - 'My brother talks and sings all day'.

Answer: 2

Talks and sings are the verbs - that is what my brother does. Brother is the noun.
10. Which of these words is a verb?

Answer: is

That was a bit tricky - 'is' comes from the verb 'to be'. Another verb that is overlooked is the verb 'to have' - has, had and have are all verbs too.
