Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which engine is number eleven?

Answer: Oliver

Oliver is saved from scrap by Douglas with his breakvan, Toad. Douglas was taking a train to the "Other Railway" were the diesels live. There, he was hailed by Oliver, who requested his help to save him and Toad from being scrapped. Douglas agreed, and helped Oliver escape to the Fat Controller's railway. All the engines welcomed him warmly.

Oliver has many adventures, which include crashing into a turntable well with some trucks, pulling the "Scruffy" truck in half and helping Duck beat the deceitful and lying bus, Bulgy.

He is olive green and has a small bunker.
2. The holder of the number 12 isn't a railway engine. Which non-rail vehicle has the number 12 painted on it?

Answer: Alfie

Alfie is an excavator. He is painted green and loves to work hard. His motto is "More work means more dirt; more dirt means more fun!"
3. Which engine is number fifty-five?

Answer: Stepney

Stepney lives on another railway. He was saved from scrap by escaping from the Diesels who had captured him. He was rescued by the Bluebell Railway, which restored him. Because of his heroic actions, the Fat Controller invited him to spend some time on his railway.

Whilst there, he had many adventures. He shunted a very indignant Thomas because of an Express special he was carrying (Thomas eventually forgave him), he accidentally steamed away with a cricket ball in his trucks, leading to a chase across the whole Island, and taking a train with Duck when a Diesel broke down. He was very sad to leave the Railway.

He is painted gold and has a bunker.
4. What number is Skarloey?

Answer: 1

Skarloey is the oldest engine on the Island of Sodor. He is a narrow-gauge engine, and works for the Thin Controller. Because of his age, he has many stories to tell, and often reminisces with the other engines. He is the brother of Rheneas. His name means "Lake in the woods."

He has had many adventures, including pulling a train home with only one cylinder and rescuing Duncan from his many scrapes.

He is painted a pale red colour.
5. What number is Sir Handel?

Answer: 3

Sir Handel, originally Falcon, is a narrow gauge engine that was bought from an old railway that closed down. He is a very cheeky, proud engine, and often annoys the other engines.

He would repeatedly feign illness to get out of work (which led to Peter Sam being involved in a nasty accident), his new 'Steam roller' wheels led him to have an accident with the Steam roller George and he almost fell of the mountain on his first train trip with Duke. Sir Handel admires Gordon immensely.

He is blue and has a very small bunker.
6. What number is Peter Sam?

Answer: 4

Peter Sam, originally Stuart, is a narrow gauge engine that was bought from an old railway that closed down (along with Sir Handel). He is very polite and is a favourite with the engines, coaches and trucks.

His most famous adventure was when some heavily-laden ballast trucks broke their rope on the incline and smashed into him. He was left battered and broken. However, he got a new funnel and can now work harder than ever. Peter Sam is usually very apologetic about Sir Handel's bad behaviour and often tries to make up for it.

He is green and has a small bunker.
7. What number is Rheneas?

Answer: 2

Rheneas is Skarloey's brother. He was the second engine on the Island of Sodor. He is a narrow-gauge engine, and works for the Thin Controller. Because of his age, he has many stories to tell, and often reminisces with the other engines. His name means "Divided waterfall."

Rheneas is almost single-handedly responsible for the Thin Controller's line staying open. Before the arrival of Sir Handel and Peter Sam, Skarloey would often be unwell, and Rheneas would have to cover for him. He even pulled a whole train home on one cylinder.

He is painted a pale red colour and has a small bunker.
8. What number is Duncan?

Answer: 6

Duncan is a very conceited, arrogant engine. He is lazy, and doesn't understand the importance placed by everyone in passengers, which he claims 'are annoying' (little does he realise that without them, he would probably be scrapped).

He became well-known for doing a "Rock and Roll" groove when he was pulling a train. This often led to becoming derailed. Once, he even did it in a tunnel, which meant he was stuck and nearly collapsed the tunnel on himself.

He is painted an amber colour and has a small bunker. He has the tallest funnel and cab out of all the narrow-gauge engines.
9. What number is Rusty?

Answer: 5

Rusty is a diesel engine, which caused some unease originally on his arrival to the railway. However, he was soon accepted by all and is now firm friends with all the engines. Interestingly, he is the only engine that travels forward as well as backwards.

His most famous adventure is his encounter with 'the Boulder'. When quarrying began on a mountain on the Island of Sodor, a huge boulder was disturbed. It eventually fell off the mountain and began to chase the engines around the island. Rusty saw to it that when it was stopped, it was placed on another mountain. He also helps restore the tracks, so the engines have a smoother ride.

He is painted orange.
10. What number is Smudger?

Answer: 2

Smudger was an American steam engine that worked on Duke's railway. He was very vain, and often tried to impress Duke. However, this usually resulted in him coming off the rails and derailing his trains. No one could reason with him or make him behave. One day, the manager had enough, and turned him into a generator. Duke told this story to Peter Sam and Sir Handel one day. He finished the story by saying: "He's still there behind our shed. He'll never move again..." Peter Sam and Sir Handel were very shocked by this, and were unusually well behaved after that.

He is painted dark green.
