Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which engine is number one?

Answer: Thomas

Thomas is probably the most famous of all the engines. His two carriages are Annie and Clarabel. As a reward for his hard work, he is given his own branch-line.

He has also had his share of mishaps, including crashing into the Stationmaster's house, leaving his coaches at the station on his first run, leaving his guard behind and crashing into a wall - shattering his buffers.

He is blue and doesn't have a tender. Instead, he has a bunker.
2. Which engine is number two?

Answer: Edward

Edward is an old engine. He has his own branch-line, station and yard. He and James didn't get along at first, but soon became firm friends. His many adventures include rescuing James when he was started without a driver, rescuing Trevor from Scrap and "limping" home with a train on two wheels.

He is blue (like Thomas) and has a small tender.
3. Which engine is number three?

Answer: Henry

Henry is one of the "big" engines. He used to have a lot of problems - he couldn't even pull a train, but after a rebuild at Crewe, he was like a new engine. He is a mixed engine, and sometimes he even pulls the Express.

His most famous incident is when he crashed while pulling the "Flying Kipper". Other incidents include being bricked up in a tunnel because he wouldn't come out and getting tricked into using "coal barges" as extra tenders.

He is green and has a large tender.
4. Which engine is number four?

Answer: Gordon

Gordon is the biggest and strongest engine. He nearly always pulls the Express. He is very arrogant and conceited, but is often kind.

His many adventures include breaking down while pulling the Express, losing his dome while trying to break a record, coming off the rails into a ditch and pulling the Royal train for the Queen's visit.

He is blue and has a large tender.
5. Which engine is number five?

Answer: James

James is a "mixed-traffic" engine - meaning he can take both trucks and coaches. He was originally painted black, but after his accident on his first day, he was re-painted red, and is the only red engine. He has a small tender.

His many escapades include being started and left to run without a driver, smashing into tar wagons after being pushed down the hill by trucks, not being able to pull the Express because of leaves, damaging coaches and the Fat Controller's top hat and being swarmed and stung by bees.
6. Which engine is number six?

Answer: Percy

Percy is a tank-engine, who was bought by the Fat Controller when Henry, Gordon and James were sulking because they wouldn't shunt their own coaches. He is an odd-jobs engine - shunting trucks, taking the mail van, etc.

Percy is very cheeky, and has had many adventures. They include racing Harold the helicopter and winning, getting tricked into believing the existence of "backing signals", getting pushed by trucks into the sea and pulling a train home through floods.

He is green and only has four wheels.
7. Which engine is number seven?

Answer: Toby

Toby is a tram engine - he has side plates and cow-catchers. His coach is called Henrietta, and she goes everywhere with him. He is the only engine on his line, and when it is closed, he is bought by the Fat Controller. He is old, but is very kind. When he worked at the Quarry, Mavis often complained about his methods, however, when Edward said, "What Toby doesn't know about trucks isn't worth knowing," Mavis stopped complaining.

His escapades include helping Thomas out of trouble with the law, rescuing James and Mavis and driving over a "tight-rope" when the bridge is washed out under him.

He is brown, but is repainted chocolate and blue. He doesn't have a tender or a bunker.
8. At the start of the series, which engine is number eight?

Answer: Duck

Duck is a Great-Western Railway engine, and his motto, "There are two ways of doing things - the Great-Western, or the wrong way" often annoys the lazier engines. His real name is Montague, but some engines said he "waddled", and because he preferred it, the name "Duck" stuck.

He has had many adventures, including smashing into a Barber's shop and getting his faced lathered with shaving cream, getting chased by trucks and smashing into the back of the "Flying Kipper".

He is green, and is about the same size as James. He doesn't have a tender, just a bunker.
9. Which engine is number nine?

Answer: Donald

He and his twin, Douglas, are Scottish, and were originally painted blue, but are now black. After some mischievous behaviour, their names were painted onto their bodies. They have both have tenders and are the same size as Henry.
10. Which engine is number ten?

Answer: Douglas

He and Donald have got up to many tricks, including swapping tenders to avoid getting into trouble, smashing a break-van, rescuing Oliver from scrap, smashing into a signal box and Donald "laying" an egg. They are both fun loving and are proud to be Scottish.
