Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I'm a black sheep that has three bags of wool. One for the master and also one for the dame. But who was the third bag for that lived down that lane?

Answer: The Little Boy

What was a little boy going to do with a bag of wool, I don't know. The rhymes "Baa Baa Black Sheep", "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" and "The Alphabet Song" all use the same tune.
2. Wee Willie Winkie was being annoying. He ran all over the village making sure all the kids were in bed. How was he dressed?

Answer: In his nightgown

Must have been a warm night for him to be dressed for bed and running the streets. Wee Willie Winkle was quite likely a Town Crier whose job it was to make sure the children were off the streets at night. The Scottish version of this song has five verses.
3. Three blind mice in the kitchen! With what did the farmer's wife attack them and cut off their tails?

Answer: Carving knife

Where was the farmer when his wife needed her? This nursery rhyme has been traced to Thomas Ravenscroft, written in 1609.
4. Jack and Jill went to fetch water in a pail. Jack fell and broke his crown. When he ran home, what did his mother put on his head to heal him?

Answer: Vinegar and brown paper

This happens in verse two. When Jill arrived home after that, the mother whipped her for causing the accident.
A theory about this rhyme is that Jack and Jill are King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette during the French Revolution. When the king was beheaded, it broke his crown and the queen's head came tumbling after.
5. That little boy just stuck his thumb in the Christmas pie and pulled out a plum! Who is he?

Answer: Jack Horner

Sitting in a corner with an entire Christmas pie to himself. Doesn't get much better than that. This poem was written in 1725, possibly about a steward named Thomas Horner, to King Henry VIII.
6. Can't get anyone to do a job right nowadays. The sheep and the cows are out. Where is that little boy blue I hired? He's fast asleep somewhere, but where?

Answer: Under the haystack

Sheep and cows are a pretty big job for a little boy and the haystack was awfully comfortable. This rhyme is at least as old as 'Tommy Thumb's Little Song Book' from 1744.
7. Pease porridge hot and cold for supper. Just how old is it though?

Answer: Nine days old

Nine days old! No thanks, I'll go out for a burger. Pease Porridge is a pot of pea based porridge that was continually topped up for as many as nine days before it became inedible.
8. Five little piggies. Which one didn't get anything?

Answer: 4th

The fourth little piggy should have crowded up close to the third piggy and got some roast beef for himself. Remember when the last piggy goes wee wee wee all the way home, you're supposed to tickle the bottom of the foot you're tugging on.
9. The monkey was chasing the weasel. He chased him all around what?

Answer: The cobbler's bench

So what do you suppose a monkey would chase a weasel for? And what would he do if he caught it?
Actually, the rhyme may refer to children employed in the 1600s to climb into giant looms running a tool called a spinner's weasel which would 'pop' when an appropriate amount of yarn passed through it.
10. Humpty Dumpty shouldn't be sitting on that wall. Look out! he fell. Who can we call to try to put him together again?

Answer: All the king's horses and all the king's men

The story is that Humpty Dumpty could have been in fact, a large cannon sitting on a wall during the Siege of Colchester. Enemy fire hit it and knocked it to the ground which of course is when all the king's horses and men couldn't put it together again.
