Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The very first modern Olympics in 1896 were, rather appropriately, held in the capital city of the country which also held the ancient Olympic games. Which city was this?

Answer: Athens

The ancient Olympics took place in what is now called Greece around 2500 years ago. When the games were revived in 1896, Athens was the unanimous choice of the organizers to be the first host city. The games returned there over a century later in 2004.
2. The first games to be held in North America took place in 1904, in which city, famous for the Gateway Arch and baseball's Cardinals?

Answer: St Louis

Chicago was originally chosen to host the 1904 games, but, after much political wrangling, they were moved to St Louis to coincide with the World's Fair, which was held in the city in that same year. These games were spread out over some five months, unlike the 21st century versions which usually last for around 16 days.
3. The first city to host the games twice did so in 1900 and 1924. Which city, home to the Louvre Museum and the Arc de Triomphe, was this?

Answer: Paris

Paris, capital city of France, were the second host of the Olympics in 1900, and they returned there 24 years later. These latter games were the first to feature an Olympic Village for the athletes to live in.
4. The 1936 games were held in which German city, famous for the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag?

Answer: Berlin

The 1936 games in Berlin were among the more infamous in Olympic history. Adolf Hitler's Nazi party were in charge, and tried to hijack the games for political purposes. Thankfully, thanks to athletes such as Jesse Owens, sport was the winner.
5. The 1956 games were the first to be held in the southern hemisphere. Which city, host to the Australian Open tennis championships, was the venue?

Answer: Melbourne

Although they are the "summer" Olympics, the 1956 games took place in what was actually winter for the majority of the contestants due to Australia being south of the equator. One sport which didn't take place in Melbourne was equestrianism - due to Australia's quarantine regulations, this sport actually took place in Stockholm, Sweden.
6. In 1964, the games were held in Asia for the first time. Which city, home to the Skytree and the Rainbow Bridge, was the host?

Answer: Tokyo

Less than 20 years after being reduced to rubble during World War Two, a rebuilt Tokyo, capital city of Japan, hosted the 1964 Olympics. These were the first games to be televised live throughout much of the world.
7. Canada hosted the summer Olympics for the first time in 1976. Which city, renowned for poutine and ice hockey's Canadiens, was the site of these games?

Answer: Montreal

These games were marred to a degree by a boycott by the majority of African nations, due to the participation of New Zealand, whose rugby team had defied anti-Apartheid policies by touring South Africa. Canada made unwanted history by becoming the first host nation to fail to win a gold medal.
8. In 1980, the games were held behind the "Iron Curtain" for the first time. Which city, home to Red Square and the Kremlin, were the hosts in that year?

Answer: Moscow

Europe was divided by an "Iron Curtain" for some 45 years following the end of World War Two, with the communist bloc in the east and the capitalist nations in the west. Moscow, capital of what was at the time the USSR, became the first communist hosts in 1980. These games were, as in 1976, marred by a boycott, this time by 66 nations, led by the USA, due to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
(The USSR, and most of her communist allies, responded by boycotting the 1984 games in Los Angeles.)
9. In 2012, which city, home to Buckingham Palace, became the first to host the games for a third time?

Answer: London

London hosted the games for the first time in 1908, and again in 1948, before becoming the first three-time hosts in 2012. Three different Olympic Stadiums were used - the White City in 1900, Wembley Stadium in 1948, and what later became known as London Stadium in 2012.
10. In 2016, which city, site of the Copacabana Beach, became the first in South America to host the summer Olympics?

Answer: Rio de Janeiro

The Brazilian city of Rio De Janeiro became the first South American hosts in 2016. These were the first games to feature a "refugee" team for displaced athletes.
