Today, the sport has evolved into a game where two teams of five players attempt to dribble (bounce) a ball down a rectangular court and try to shoot it into a net to score points. Depending on the situation, a basket can count as either one, two, or three points.

A 6-meter zone is located at both ends of the court and only goaltenders are allowed in it. In volleyball, two teams of six players serve and receive a white ball back and forth over a net. Points can be scored by either side during the course of play. To score a point, the ball must hit the floor or the ground (typically within boundaries of the court). One team serves the ball over the net and the other team receives the ball. To receive the ball, they must bump it with their hands (or volley). Once bumped, they may set the ball to their teammates but are only allowed to touch the ball twice after the initial bump.

They may spike the ball by smashing the ball downwards with their hands over the net. The defensive team may block balls with their hands.
