Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "The Lightning Thief", what kind of sandwich did Nancy Bobofit throw at Grover?

Answer: peanut butter and ketchup

On the bus going to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Percy gets angry at Nancy for throwing wads of peanut butter and ketchup sandwich. He later wishes he would have just decked her, because he would have gotten in trouble and possibly avoided getting attacked by his per-algebra teacher later on.
2. In "The Lightning Thief", which is NOT one of the strange events that happened to Percy as a child?

Answer: A sphinx attacked him in an alley

As a child, Percy had some wacky experiences. The first was in preschool, when his teacher laid him down for a nap. When his mom came to pick him up, she saw her son playing with a dead snake, which he'd strangled to death. When he was in second grade, some creeper started stalking him on the playground. He went away when the teachers threatened to call the police, but before he did, Percy noticed that he had one eye in the center of his forehead. Plus, every year, when he and his mom went to Montauk Beach, he saw faces smiling at him in the surf, then they disappeared.

However, Percy was never attacked by a sphinx in an alley. That happened to Tyson, Percy's half-brother.
3. In "The Sea of Monsters", when the Lastrygonian Giants attack Percy, Matt Sloan blurts out "You're not from ______!" Name the city.

Answer: Detroit

Matt Sloan, who the Giants "befriend", is a mortal, and is utterly shocked when he sees the Giants as they really are. He comments on how they aren't from Detroit, which, I think, is reference to a later book: "The Lost Hero," where three demigods find themselves in Detroit, pitted against a lady Cyclops. Joe Bob, the head Lastrygonian, says something about his Babycakes. I think he was talking about that Cyclops, who did have two kids. O.o
4. In "The Sea of Monsters", when Percy sees Annabeth's deepest dreams that the Sirens sing, the buildings in Manhattan are made of what material?

Answer: Marble

As Percy and Annabeth approach the Island of the Sirens, Annabeth hears the song of the Sirens, which sings of the heart's true desire. For Annabeth, that's reuniting her parents, bringing Luke back to the gods' side, and rebuilding Manhattan. Everything's in marble because that's what the buildings in Ancient Greece were made of.
5. In "The Titan's Curse", when Percy tells Rachel his sword is a pen, she says: "It's either a sword or ____________." Finish the statement.

Answer: the word's largest toothpick

This encounter is at the Hoover Dam, when Percy, thinking she is a skeleton, accidentally runs Rachel through with his sword. Rachel, being mortal, isn't affected by the sword. Percy tries to manipulate her with the Mist and tell her that his sword is a ballpoint pen, but it doesn't work.
6. In "The Titan's Curse", What are the names of Annabeth's step brothers?

Answer: Mathew and Bobby

Mathew and Bobby are the correct answers. This is where you might have heard the other names before --
Michael Yew is an Apollo camper who dies in the second titan war.
Drew is an Aphrodite camper in "The Heroes of Olympus" series.
Charles Beckandorf is the head of the Hephaestus cabin.
Matt Sloan is a bully at Meriweather Prep in "The Sea of Monsters."
Gleason Hedge is a satyr who writes Grover in "The Last Olympian" and rescues some heroes in "The Lost Hero."
Fredrick Chase is Annabeth's dad.
7. In "The Battle of the Labyrinth", how does Rachel earn Percy's respect?

Answer: She hits Kronos with a blue plastic hair brush

Rachel, in fact, did do all these things -- she made it through the quest alive and sane, can see through the Mist, and saved Percy's life against some empousai in the beginning of "The Battle of the Labyrinth" -- but it was after she hit Kronos with her plastic hairbrush that Percy commented that she had won his permanent respect.
8. In "The Battle of the Labyrinth, what sacred rule does Annabeth break while embarking on her quest?

Answer: taking only two people

Instead of taking two people on her quest, she takes three: Percy, Grover, and Tyson. She says that she needs all of them. It is important to only take two people because she and her two accomplices would total to three, which is a sacred number in Greek mythology. (Ex: The Big Three)
9. In "The Last Olympian", Percy notes that Rachel does protests for assorted causes. What was one that he mentioned?

Answer: Save the Yellow Bellied Sapsucker

The protest movement Percy mentioned is Save the Yellow Bellied Sapsucker. Although Rachel does support the gods, and is part of a program called Urban Arts for Kids, she also supports nature, which is why she protests for endangered species, like the yellow bellied sapsucker.
10. In "The Last Olympian", who does Hyperion order to stay on Mount Othrys and look after Atlas?

Answer: Krios

Krios is the Titan of stars. In "The Lost Hero", we find out that Jason battled and defeated him at the same time that Kronos was overthrown.
Prometheus, Morpheus, and Hecate were all on the Titans' side as well, but they were part of the battles in Manhattan, not at Mount Othrys.
