Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Oops, it's dark in here. What do you use to enlighten things?

Answer: Lumos

"Lumos" is one of the simpler spells. It emits a small amount of light from the tip of your wand. Muggles (non-wizarding humans) find it easier to search for the light switch.
There are a few variations on the spell "Lumos". "Lumos Maxima" emits a very bright ray, but only for a brief time. "Lumos Solem" emits light similar to sunlight on a bright day.
2. Time to do the dishes. You'll need water for this task. Which spell comes in handy?

Answer: Aguamenti

Aguamenti makes water appear from your wand. Muggles can't understand where the water comes from: they are used to opening the tap.
The best known use of this spell was in "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince". When Professor Dumbledore was very thirsty, Harry used "Aguamenti" to fill up a drinking vessel.
3. Where is the dishwashing liquid? If you can name it but you can't find it, you may try which spell?

Answer: Accio

"Accio Dishwashing Liquid" (or the brand name) helps you to locate the dish soap. The spell "Accio" is even better than just using your eyes: not only will you find the nearest example of the thing you named, but it will also fly towards you. Mind you: some magic objects can be protected by a counterspell that makes the "Accio" spell ineffective.
4. You forgot the spell to fetch you the dish soap. Which spell could you use instead to clean the dishes?

Answer: Scourgify

"Scourgify" is a cleaning charm. This spell is used a few times in "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix", once by Nymphadora Tonks to clean Hedwig's cage. Muggles would envy you for this spell, for cleaning a bird's cage may not be the chore they desire.

But it could be worse: in the same book, Ginny preferred the "Scourgify" spell to clean up spilled Stinksap on the Hogwarts Express - a task no wizard or witch would dare undertake without magic.
5. Time to place the clean dishes in the appropriate cupboard. Oh no, the cupboard is locked, and the key has been lost. What can you use right now?

Answer: Alohamora

"Alohamora" is a very useful spell: it unlocks all locked doors (except if someone has applied a counterspell). Hermione was the first to use this spell in "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" to open the locked door behind which the three-headed dog Fluffy guarded a trapdoor.
By the way, the aforesaid book was published in the USA under a different title ("Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone").
When our heroes managed to get past Fluffy, they found another door - which did not unlock at "Alohamora" - it was protected by a counterspell, and only fetching one flying key out of a multitude could get you through the door.
6. All right, you've done the dishes, and now you need to move a heavy book chest. Uh-oh, don't try to lift it in the muggle way: it's far too heavy. A few spells may come in handy, but which one would ONLY lift it up (without moving it in a horizontal way)?

Answer: Wingardium Leviosa

"Wingardium Leviosa" is used to lift inanimate things. First-year students at Hogwarts practice this spell on feathers, and once in "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" Ron masters the spell, using it on the bludgeon a troll is waving about.
"Locomotor chest" is a better choice: it not only lifts the chest, but also allows you to steer it around to its new place.
For use on a living person, a similar spell is "Levicorpus".
7. Whew, you've done your chores. Time to rest with a little book you found in the chest you've just moved. Uh-oh, that book is indeed very little - far too little to read. Which spell helps you enlarge this booklet so you might read it?

Answer: Engorgio

"Engorgio" is a spell that can inflate both inanimate objects (such as books) and living creatures. In "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", professor Alastair Moody used it on a spider to better illustrate the effects of the three unforgivable curses.
The opposite of "Engorgio" is "Reducio" - not the better known "Reducto" that is more violent. "Reducio" simply decreases the scale of an object, while "REducto" shrinks it and shatters it into pieces.
8. It seems you will have no time to read. The doorbell rings, and two of your friends come in with various wounds. Apparently they just escaped a fight with Deatheaters. Harry's glasses are broken. What can you do to fix them?

Answer: Oculus Reparo

"Oculus Reparo" is one specific form of the more general spell "Reparo", which is used to mend things. The smartest of you will have recognised the word "repair" as what Muggles name this action.
Harry's glasses are indeed repaired a few times throughout the series. In the movies, Hermione was the first to do so.
"Oculus Reparo" does not only repair the glasses, but in the movies we see that it also cleanses them.
9. Luna is also hurt: her nose is broken. Which spell will set it straight?

Answer: Episkey

"Episkey" is indeed useful for healing minor injuries, such as a broken nose. In "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince", Harry's nose was broken by Draco and repaired by Nymphadora Tonks (according to the book) or by Luna Lovegood (according to the movie).

In the movie, Harry asked Luna if she fixed a broken nose before, to which she replied "No. But I've done several toes, and how different are they, really?"
10. You've done your chores, and you've helped your friends after their encounter with the Deatheaters. Time to go to bed now. Which spell could you use to extinguish all the lamps, so you can sleep well in the dark?

Answer: Nox

"Nox" is the opposite of "Lumos": it turns everything to darkness. There are some other methods too: you could use Peruvian Instant Darkness Powder (as seen in "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince") or use Dumbledore's invention, the Deluminator (used at first in "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" and also in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows").
