1. What feature of the sabre-toothed tigers gave them their name?

Answer: upper teeth

The sabre-toothed tiger's (or sabre-toothed cat) upper canine teeth were up to eight inches long and looked like sabres (swords). These early mammals were not related to present day tigers.
2. Pterodactyls were ancestors of today's birds.

Answer: False

Pterodactyls were flying reptiles. Their wings were made of skin that stretched between their long fingers. An early bird type of creature was the archaeopteryx, which some consider to be an ancestor of today's birds.
3. What early mammal is an extinct elephant?

Answer: mammoth

The mammoth looked similar to the elephants we know today, with a trunk and tusks. Its curved tusks were a lot longer though. Some mammoths were hairy. The urus is an extinct wild ox and the megathere an extinct large sloth. The dimetrodon was a reptile.
4. The earliest ancestor of the horse was no bigger than a fox.

Answer: True

The first horse was called eohippus and was very small. It had four toes on its front feet and three toes on its back feet.
5. Where did the earliest animals live?

Answer: in the sea

About 570 million years ago the only animal life was in the sea. One form of animal life was the trilobite. Many fossils of the trilobite have been found and can be seen in museums.
