Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The theme song of "Sofia the First", sung by Sofia, tells us she was a commoner until "I became a Princess overnight". How did THAT happen?

Answer: Her mother married the king of the realm.

Sofia's mother Miranda married King Roland II of the Kingdom of Enchancia. We later find out that Sofia's biological father was lost at sea.
2. Sofia has two siblings, Amber and James. What's special about her new brother and sister?

Answer: They're twins.

Amber and James are (of course) fraternal twins, and her brand-new step-siblings. James appears to get along with sister Sofia without any issues, but Amber is quite a bit more high maintenance! She has issues of jealousy toward Sofia over Sofia's friends and Sofia's generally sunny personality. Amber also tends to consider herself to be a bit above everyone else in her world and is sometimes hard to live with, but mostly the two girls get along well and all the children share adventures together.
3. Sofia has several animals that are dear to her, but one in particular (possibly a friend of Thumper, Benjamin, or Peter) is especially precious in her eyes. Who is he?

Answer: Clover, a rabbit

Clover is Sofia's closest friend in many ways, and very often her confidante as well. They have a special ability to communicate with one another that is shared with no one else in the family.
4. What is the magical item Sofia keeps with her at all times?

Answer: an amulet

The Amulet of Avalor was a gift to Sofia from her new stepfather, King Roland II. She must keep it with her at all times, though, because the castle sorcerer strongly suspects it gives her magical power, although he doesn't know the nature of that power. He spends considerable time trying to steal the amulet from Sofia.
5. What power is conferred upon Sofia when she carries her magical item with her?

Answer: She can talk with animals.

Sofia's magical amulet allows her to converse with animals, and also allows her to transform back and forth into a mermaid. However, it only works for Sofia's benefit when she acts in ways consistent with good Princess-like conduct, i.e., honestly, unselfishly, and with kindness and consideration for others.

In one episode, Sofia wins a singing competition and becomes pretty full of herself until her amulet robs her of her singing voice. She doesn't get her voice back until she repents and mends her ways.
6. What characters, previously introduced to to the world in an animated classic movie, are Sofia's teachers at the school of royalty where she learns "Princess etiquette"?

Answer: Flora, Fauna and Merryweather

The three fairy godmothers from "Sleeping Beauty" are the teachers at Sofia's school, which, according to the show's theme song, is "just for royalty". The princes and princesses in attendance learn proper behavior and magic--and presumably, more mundane things like math and spelling...
7. Running a castle is a lot of work! Who manages the castle and keeps everyone on the right track, from the king right down to the most humble servant?

Answer: Baileywick

Baileywick is voiced by none other than Tim Gunn of "Project Runway" fame. The cartoon character bears a strong resemblance to Mr. Gunn. Baileywick's title is Chief Steward. He knows every aspect of running the castle (it's his bailiwick-note the pun!): he keeps the king on track (King Roland has a tendency to want to abdicate his responsibilities at times, nothing major, but occasionally he needs a gentle reminder that he is the king and can't just frolic through the daisies); he keeps the children in check (most of the time); he ensures that scheduled events go off without a hitch; and he is always instantly on the spot whenever anything untoward occurs, ready to assist in any way to avert trouble.
8. Every royal family needs a sorcerer on its payroll. What is the name of the magic man in Sofia's castle?

Answer: Cedric

Cedric is one of those characters that is hard to pigeonhole- he's a devious and greedy soul who spends a great deal of time devising ways of gaining power, because he wants to be king himself. He is also very focused on stealing Sofia's amulet so he can control its power. He is unfailingly rude to the children when they seek him out- in fact, Cedric appears to like no one around the castle, with the possible exception of Wormwood, his pet raven and partner in mischief. He is also a shameless sycophant who curries favor with the king every chance he gets.

But on occasion he shows a softer side, and even has been helpful to some of the people in his sphere- not often, but often enough so that he can't just be dismissed as villainous.
9. Who are Ruby and Jade?

Answer: friends of Sofia's from her village days

Ruby and Jade are Sofia's best friends, whom she's known for long before she became a princess. She continues to see them, although the change in Sofia's status and lifestyle sometimes cause some bumps in the road of friendship-which always get worked out by the end of the episode!
10. Sofia befriends a young witch who causes lots of trouble for villagers and royalty alike. What is the name of this reformed little witch- a name shared with a member of a love triangle in the book "Don Quixote"?

Answer: Lucinda

Lucinda comes from a long line of evil witches, but she is lonely and wants to be friends with the village kids. Pressure from her family to perform hexes is tough to resist, though, and Lucinda makes life unpleasant for every village child at one time or another, until Sofia befriends her and shows her a better way to interact with others. With some coaxing, Lucinda decides she would rather be a good witch than a bad one.
