Splls Wtht Vwls Trivia Quiz

I've used the "Removocali" spell once again - which removes every vowel. Can you restore the vowels in the following spells? Don't look for the "Removocali" spell in the books - I've invented it in my last year at Hogwarts.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One night I saw from afar the red rays from a fight. So I used "Totalum Removocali" and sought what happened. Fleur tried to get our attention by yelling PRCLM. What does that mean?

Answer: Periculum

In normal circumstances, "Periculum" sends a group of red sparks high into the sky. Now Fleur's PRCLM did only ignite a few little red drops. The intention is to call out for help. This charm was used in "Goblet of Fire" during the third task of the Triwizard tournament, when Fleur had to quit the competition.
2. Bellatrix turned to me and used one of her favourite spells But as it came out as CRC, it didn't hurt me at all. What spell did Bellatrix try to use but came out as CRC?

Answer: Crucio

"Crucio" is one of the unforgivable curses. In its full form it causes intense pain in the victim. But as it came without vowels, I didn't feel intense pain - just a slight itch.
The cruciatus curse is used repeatedly in the books from "Goblet of Fire" onwards. A group of Death Eaters used it on Frank and Alice Longbottom, Neville's parents, so often that Frank and Alice went insane.
Contrary to many other curses, "Crucio" doesn't seem to lead to physical damage.
3. I forgot that I'm affected by the Removocali spell too: every witch and wizard within eyesight is. So I yelled STPFY but to no avail. What is the normal version of STPFY ?

Answer: Stupefy

"Stupefy" is the stunning spell. It sends out a red beam and temporarily stuns the recipient. But "Stupefy" has effect only when it hits the recipient. In my case, STPFY sent out a red beam of only two inches (5 cm), so it didn't hit anyone.
As Harry explained in "Order of the Phoenix", stunning is one of the basic weapons in the arsenal of a trained wizard. Minerva McGonagall once was hit by four stunning spells at once (when officials of the Ministry of Magic came to remove Hagrid from the Hogwarts grounds), but luckily she survived.
4. Draco Malfoy was ready to defend against my STPFY spell. He yelled PRTG at me. What does PRTG mean?

Answer: Protego

"Protego" is the blocking spell. It blocks jinxes (the lightest of the dark spells) and maybe hexes (intermediate dark spells) and sends them back to the spell caster.
In the books many people have used the blocking spell. The most obvious example (which also demonstrates the backfiring) was in "The Half-Blood Prince", when Harry finally resisted Snape's "Legilimens" curse. Harry yelled "Protego" and not only Snape not intrude into Harry's mind, but Harry also perceived some of Snape's memories.
5. Hermione had figured out what happened (of course: she is the smartest witch of her time). So instead of attacking Draco with any spell, she landed her fist on his nose. Ouch! Draco thought he needed to cast a healing spell, but it came out as PSKY. Now what does PSKY mean?

Answer: Episkey

"Episkey" is the healing spell that can fix minor injuries, such as a nosebleed. Tonks used this spell to heal Harry's nose after an incident on the Hogwarts Express in "The Half Blood Prince".
This episode is quite similar to an event in "Prisoner of Azkaban". Fed up with Draco calling her a mud blood, Hermione struck him on the nose with her fist. Afterwards she said "That felt good".
6. I just took cover before Lord Voldemort could cast a spell. But to his great amazement his curse sounded like "VD KDVR !". Now what does VD KDVR mean?

Answer: Avada Kedavra

"Avada Kedavra" is the killing curse. It is one of the Unforgivable curses. When completed, this curse strikes with a green ray of light, and cause instantaneous death.
As far as the wizarding world knows, there is no defence against the killing curse. But Harry has escaped from it on several occasions.
As shown in "Chamber of Secrets", an incomplete incantation does not do any damage. When Harry freed Dobby the house elf by luring Lucius into throwing away a dirty sock (which Dobby caught), Lucius became quite angry. He pointed his wand at Harry and yelled "Avada", but was interrupted by Dobby with the words "You shall not harm Harry Potter".
So I could assume that my "Removocali" spell could indeed block the killing curse, as now demonstrated.
7. As the fight dragged on, both parties saw that it was better to try and sneak away. The "Removocali" spell had made magic attacks almost completely impossible. Draco was the first to try to get away through a locked door. But LHMR did not open the door for him. What is the full version of LHMR?

Answer: Alohomora

"Alohomora" opens doors or locks. Hermione used this spell for the first time in "The Philosopher's Stone" (in the USA this book is titled "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone") to unlock the door hiding the entry to the place where the mythical Philosopher's stone has been hidden, protected by a number of traps.
The origin of "Alohomora" is not Latin as in most spells, but Sidiki - a West-African language or dialect. The Sidiki term "Alohomora" is translated into English as "friendly to thieves".
8. Because opening the door with a spell did not work, Draco took a heavy object and flung it through a glass window. Many shards of the glass scarred me, so after the battle I needed healing. Luckily Snape arrived and uttered "VLNR SNNTR". Oops, that did not do the trick. What was it that Snape tried to use on me?

Answer: Vulnera Sanentur

"Vulnera Sanentur" is a powerful healing spell, having the effect of ending blood loss, clearing the area (so no dirt can cause infection of the wounds) and closing the wounds. This healing spell was one of the many spells Snape invented.
Snape needed this healing spell as a remedy when a foe would have used "Sectumsempra", another spell spell Snape invented and which inflicts on the victim multiple cuts. It was used only in "The Half Blood Prince", when Harry had hit Draco with "Sectumsempra" and Snape cured Draco by using "Vulnera Sanentur".
9. Finally I decided to leave. So I yelled "CC BRMSTCK", but it did not work out. What is the normal form of CC BRMSTCK?

Answer: Accio Broomstick

"Accio" is the summoning spell. It can fetch any specific object, even if it is not in sight. Harry used "Accio Broomstick" in the first task of the Tri-Wizard tournament, when he faced a fierce dragon.
Now what would I do with a broomstick? Sweep the floor? No, that's what muggles think a broomstick is made for. Some muggles may also think I'd use the broomstick to hit my opponents over the head. But no, we wizards and witches, of course, use the broomstick to fly away.
10. All opponents have left, and so Fleur, Hermione, Snape and I were quite safe. We went to a nearby pub and ordered refreshments. But as the Removocali spell still was active, our order came out totally jumbled. It was as if I'd used the CNFND charm on the waitress. What is the CNFND charm?

Answer: Confundo

"Confundo" is a charm that blurs the victim's mind. As a result the victim seems not to know what he's doing, and does not understand what happens around him.
Hermione used this confounding charm on Cormac Mclaggen in "The Half Blood Prince" during the try-outs for the Gryffindor quidditch team. Hermione wanted Ron to become the new keeper of the team, and not the rude braggart Cormac. So whenever Cormac was trying to stop a throw, Hermione confounded his mind so Cormac defended the wrong goal.
At last I remembered the use of the "Totalus Removocali" spell in the beginning . So I spoke out "RSTVCL", the counter spell which would be written out "Restovocali". Of course this spell is only used without the vowels, for otherwise it would not have the desired effect.
