Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to the folk-dance song, what is the name of the 'big black dog who sat on the back porch'?

Answer: Bingo

The song is sometimes sung:
There was a farmer who had a dog,
And Bingo was his name-o.
B-I-N-G-O
B-I-N-G-O
B-I-N-G-O
And Bingo was his name-o.

However, the 'Big black dog who sat on the back porch' version is usually used for folk dancing.
2. Stop! Says the red light Go! Says the green... According to this rhyme, what colour light says 'Be careful!'?

Answer: Yellow

Stop! Says the red light
Go! Says the green
Be careful! Says the yellow light
Flashing in between

Learn the colours of the traffic lights so you know when it's safe to cross the road!
3. What did Little Boy Blue blow?

Answer: His horn

Little Boy Blue, come blow your horn;
The sheep's in the meadow, the cow's in the corn.
Where is the boy who looks after the sheep?
He's under the haystack, fast asleep.

Unlike many nursery rhymes which have an historical figure as its subject, Little Boy Blue is generally thought to have its roots in peaceful pastoral life.
4. Ribbit! What little green creature went 'galumph' one day?

Answer: Frog

This is a fun action song for camp! There are many regional versions of this song, and some suggest the frog says 'galoop' or 'glop'. I chose the one I grew up with!
5. What fruity colours do the bells of St. Clement's say?

Answer: Oranges and lemons

St Clement's is a small church situated in St. Clement's Lane, Eastcheap, England. The "oranges and lemons" refers to the citrus fruits unloaded at nearby wharves.
6. Lavender's blue, dilly dilly, Lavender's green When you are king, dilly dilly, I shall be _________. What shall I be?

Answer: Queen

In the middle ages, lavender was often put under the pillows of girls who wanted to dream of their true love. I don't know if it ever worked!
7. What sort of bird flies in and out of the window, in the children's dancing song?

Answer: Bluebird

Bluebird, bluebird, in and out the window
Bluebird, bluebird, in and out the window
Bluebird, bluebird, in and out the window
Oh Jenny, aren't you tired?

This is such a fun dancing song for playtime, and ends up with a long line of 'birds' flying in and out of a diminishing number of windows.
8. "A-tisket a-tasket A green and _____ basket I wrote a letter to my love And on the way I dropped it" What colour completes the verse?

Answer: Yellow

'Tisket' and 'tasket' aren't real things, but are used to rhyme with the word 'basket'. Sometimes the song says the basket is yellow, with no green. I wonder what shape it was? It sounds as though the letter the person put into blew away!
9. From what did the 'little white duck sitting in the water' take a bite?

Answer: A lily pad

There's a little white duck sitting in the water
A little white duck doing what he oughter
He took a bite of a lily pad
Flapped his wings and he said "I'm glad;
I'm a little white duck sitting in the water,
Quack! Quack! Quack!"

Later in this song the duck is frightened by a red snake who hisses at him!
10. What is the colour of the 'pumpkins growin' on the vine'?

Answer: Orange

Orange pumpkins growin' on the vine,
Orange pumpkins, oh, so fine!
Orange pumpkins growin' on the ground,
Orange pumpkins big and round.

These pumpkins are great for carving, unless you prefer to make a Cinderella-style carriage instead!
