Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For starters, where does the story "The Borrowers" take place?

Answer: It doesn't say

It doesn't mention where in the first book. In the sequels, you begin to realize that it's in England, but it doesn't mention anything in the first book about which country they live in.
2. Now what exactly are Borrowers?

Answer: Tiny people who borrow for a living

In the story, our main character clearly states that Borrowers are tiny people who borrow for a living. They take stuff humans won't miss if they find it missing.
3. How old is our main character?

Answer: Thirteen

Arrietty, our main character, is an adventurous, tomboy Borrower who wishes to go borrowing. She is finally allowed to go on a borrowing expedition in this book.
4. What happens when Arrietty goes borrowing?

Answer: She meets a human boy

She meets a human boy who is visiting his aunt because he is sick and needs to be in the country to get better. He never squashed her or kidnapped her.
5. True or false: The Boy is ten years old.

Answer: False

In their meeting, Arrietty guessed that the boy was ten, but he proudly answered that he was nine years old. Arrietty was shocked at his maturity for a nine year old.
6. What is it that the Boy cannot do?

Answer: He can't read

The Boy could not read. He always wanted to read, but he's too young to learn. The country he is from, India, won't let him learn until he is older. So Arrietty offers to read to him. Once the Boy leaves to grab a book, Arrietty's father, Pod, comes and tells her that they have to go because he sensed that a human "bean" was around.
7. Where do Arrietty and her parents, Pod and Homily, live?

Answer: In the floors, under the Grandfather Clock

They lived in the floors, under the Grandfather Clock. In "The Borrowers", Borrowers are named after the place they live under, in, or above. Therefore, the last name of Arrietty and her family is Clock.
8. What are the Borrowers supposed to do after the Boy finds out that they exist?

Answer: They have to leave

They are supposed to leave because Borrowers aren't supposed to be seen. But before they can leave, the Boy gives them all kinds of things from the dollhouse, hoping they'll accept them. At first they accept them until something dangerous happens.
9. Does anybody else besides the Boy find out about the Borrowers?

Answer: Yes

Yes, one person does. Mrs. Driver finds out about them when she one day opens the top of their house and finds them there. She screams and the Borrowers hide quickly. She tells everybody about mice with outfits on them and is determined to kill them.
10. And what happens to the Borrowers?

Answer: They are able to escape with the Boy's help

The Borrowers were able to escape being seen by Mrs. Driver again. The Boy tries to help the Borrowers by telling them to get in a clothespin bag. They try it but it doesn't work and he never sees them again because they end up back inside their home under the floors.

Right before anybody is able to capture the Borrowers, the Boy creates an opening for them to escape and then he leaves.

Thus ends the story of "The Borrowers".
