Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The main character of the book, this girl was very smart and liked to tell stories. Who was she?

Answer: Sara

Sara Crewe came to a boarding school in London when she was seven years old. Before then, she had been living in India with her rich father, Captain Crewe. Sara was a very smart, kind, and optimistic girl who enjoyed reading and storytelling. She could speak fluent French.

After she had been at the school for a few years, her father died and she was left without any money. She then moved into the attic and worked tirelessly for the school. Eventually, though, she had a happy ending when she met her father's old friend and had her wealth restored.
2. This little girl didn't have her own mama, but one of the other characters pretended to be her mother at the school. Who was she?

Answer: Lottie

At the beginning of the book, Lottie was four years old and one of the youngest girls at the school. Even at a young age, she had learned how to use not having a mother to her advantage. She would throw fits about how she didn't have a mother. When she met Sara, though, the older girl took her under her wing and pretended to be her mother. Later, Lottie would visit Sara in the attic.
3. What was the name of the young, overworked scullery maid who worked at the boarding school?

Answer: Becky

Becky was fourteen years old at the beginning. She worked at the school as a maid and lived in the attic. Despite her situation, though, she was very nice. She became friends with Sara and loved to listen to her stories. After Sara became rich again, Becky left the school to work for Sara instead.
4. What was the name of the mean woman who ran the boarding school in the book?

Answer: Miss Minchin

Miss Minchin owned the boarding school that Sara attended. She hated and resented Sara because of how smart she was. But, while Sara was rich, Miss Minchin treated her like a princess. After Sara's father died, though, she made Sara move to the attic and become a maid alongside Becky.
5. This girl hated reading and didn't do very well in school. Who was she?

Answer: Ermengarde

Ermengarde was a fat, dumb girl, but that didn't stop Sara from becoming her friend right away. Like most of the other girls, she enjoyed hearing Sara tell stories. Sara also tutored her. After Sara moved to the attic, Ermengarde would sneak up to visit her some nights.
6. This character was a very mean girl who hated and made fun of the other girls. Who was she?

Answer: Lavinia

Lavinia was a mean girl who gossiped and made fun of Sara and the other girls. She was friends with Jesse, with whom she would share her snide remarks. She called Sara "Princess Sara" sarcastically.
7. What was the name of the gentleman who moved in next to the boarding school, and who had been friends with Captain Crewe?

Answer: Mr. Carrisford

Mr. Carrisford had been friends with Sara's father and had convinced him to invest in diamond mines in India. When the business venture didn't go as planned and Captain Crewe got sick and died, he blamed himself. He had also become sick and moved back to London. He spent years looking for Sara, not knowing until later that she was living right next door.
8. What was the name of the Indian servant who worked in the house next to the school?

Answer: Ram Dass

Ram Dass was a kind Indian man who worked for Mr. Carrisford. It was his idea to make Sara's attic room better, and he convinced Mr. Carrisford to furnish her room. At night he would sneak over across the roof and put things in her room.
9. Although not a real person, what was the name of the main character's beloved doll?

Answer: Emily

Sara's father bought Emily for Sara when they first arrived in London. He also bought her a full set of fancy clothing. Sara liked to imagine that Emily moved around when no one was looking. She talked to the doll as if she was a real person.
10. What was the name of the beggar girl who ended up working in the bakery?

Answer: Anne

One day, while out running errands, Sara found a fourpence in the street, which she used to buy six buns at the bakery. Before she went in to buy them, she saw a little girl outside. When she came out again, she gave most of the buns to the girl. The woman working at the bakery was affected by seeing Sara be so kind and invited the beggar girl in.

It wasn't until the end of the book that Sara returned to the bakery to find the girl working there and learned her name was Anne.
