Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A jolly clairvoyant (seer)

Answer: The Happy Medium

The Happy Medium laughed easily and liked to think about happy things. When the children first met her, she was staring into a crystal ball and laughing. She wore a turban of pale purple silk, and a long purple satin gown.
2. A tall and furry creature with tentacles

Answer: Aunt Beast

Aunt Beast looked very different from a human and lived on a peaceful planet called Ixchel. She had four arms and tentacles instead of fingers. She was able to read minds and communicated her very loving and caring nature to Meg.
3. A girl who is sent through time and space to rescue her father

Answer: Meg Murry

Meg felt as though she didn't "fit in". She had a very low opinion of herself. She was very good in Math (which her father taught her). Meg admired her mother very much and wished she could be more like her. When she realized how much pain her mother was actually in (with the help of the Happy Medium), Meg became determined to save her father.
4. A physicist who worked on top secret government experiments

Answer: Mr Alex Murry

Mr. Murry was a research scientist who went missing while working on an experiment involving tesseracts. A tesseract (as described in the book) is the fifth dimension, a portal (or gateway) through space and time.
5. Meg's mother, an experimental biologist, who worked from her lab at home.

Answer: Dr Katherine (Kate) Murry

Kate Murry had bright red hair and was very pretty. She was an inspiration to Meg. Although she appeared outwardly calm, inside she was very distressed by her husband's disappearance.
6. A celestial being whose voice sounded like an echo

Answer: Mrs Which

Mrs Which was hundreds of millions years old. She was the most powerful of the three Mrs W's. Although she wasn't as friendly as Mrs Whatsit, she quickly became someone Meg trusted.
7. A robot-like inhabitant of Camazotz

Answer: Man With the Red Eyes

The Man With the Red Eyes was the leader of the CENTRAL Central Intelligence. His eyes were bright red with a red glow. His lips never moved when he "spoke"; in fact, his voice could not be heard in the usual way because it entered a person's brain directly.
8. A celestial being who used to be star

Answer: Mrs Whatsit

Mrs Whatsit was the most human-like being of the three Mrs W's (but she could turn herself into winged centaur). Mrs Whatsit had a very mixed up way of dressing and usually looked like she grabbed any old thing to wear, but underneath her messy exterior she resembled a sweet old grandmother.
9. The a bodiless brain that controlled all the inhabitants of the planet Camazotz

Answer: IT

IT was a living brain without a body, that beat and quivered. IT didn't speak, but communicated by vibrations that controlled thoughts. Under IT's spell the people of Camazotz became almost robotic, with IT making all their decisions.
10. An intelligent five-year-old brother of Meg

Answer: Charles Wallace Murry

Although he was only five he spoke like a college professor! Charles Wallace was able to read minds and understand the other creatures he met on the journey to rescue Mr Murry. Even though Mrs Whatsit warned him, he let his pride and overconfidence place him in a very dangerous situation.
11. A popular high-school athlete

Answer: Calvin O'Keefe

Calvin accompanied the Murry children on their quest. He came from a large family that didn't not really care about him, but he, himself, was loving and affectionate. He became Meg's protector and showed a romantic interest in her.
12. Meg's school principal

Answer: Mr Jenkins

Mr Jenkins was cold and unfeeling. He was very insensitive when he asked Meg about her father's whereabouts. He called Meg "belligerent and uncooperative", and implied that her family was in denial about Mr Murry's true whereabouts, as he believed the rumor that Mr Murry ran off with another woman.
13. The Murry family dog

Answer: Fortinbras

Fortinbras was a stray who ended up on the Murry's doorstep, "scrawny and abandoned", on a cold winter night. While you may think that Fortinbras just ran around randomly barking, in the early part of the book we learned he was a very good guard dog. His bark alerted Meg that someone was outside the house.
14. A dark, evil force

Answer: The Black Thing

The Black Thing was the source of all evil in the universe. When the children first saw the Black Thing it looked like a distant shadow. Calvin immediately disliked it and he realized it darkened the mood of anyone who even look in its direction. Mrs Which explained that it was the power of darkness. Mrs Whatsit said that planets all over the universe fought it, some planets were successful and some were not. Earth was fighting it and hadn't been taken over by it. Mrs Whatsit gave up her existence as a star to fight the Black Thing.
15. A celestial being who gave her glasses to Meg (with a special purpose)

Answer: Mrs Who

Mrs Who was very vague and often spoke in foreign quotations. She lived in a haunted house with the other Mrs W's. When the children first met her she was sewing bedsheets together "to make ghosts" to scare visitors away from the house. During the travels to rescue Mr Murry the glasses gave Meg the ability to see her father trapped in a long dark column.
