Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to Grandpa Joe, what is left on a person's tongue after they have sucked on a 'Blue Bird's Egg' sweet?

Answer: A pink sugary baby bird

This is just one of the creations that Grandpa Joe tells Charlie about in Chapter Two. Others include ice-cream that can stay frozen for hours without refrigeration, caramels that change colour every ten seconds as you suck them, chewing gum that never loses its flavour and candy balloons that can be blown up to enormous sizes before popping and eating.
2. What kind of chocolate bar does Charlie Bucket receive as a birthday present?

Answer: Wonka's Whipple-Scrumptious Fudge Mallow Delight

Roald Dahl was born September 13th 1916 in Wales and was named after the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen. Both of Dahl's parents, Harald and Sofie, migrated from Norway. Dahl had three sisters, Astri, Alfhild and Else.
3. What did Willy Wonka call the edible grass in the Chocolate Room?

Answer: Swudge

The Chocolate Room is full of edible flowers, trees, shrubs and grass. It is also the room that contains the chocolate waterfall that is used to churn the chocolate to make it 'light and frothy'. While the visitors are in the Chocolate Room, the Oompa Loompas are seen for the first time and Augustus Gloop falls in the river and gets sucked up the pipe.
4. What did Willy Wonka make the boat out of, that was used to row down the chocolate river?

Answer: A boiled sweet

As an eight year old schoolboy, Roald, along with four of his schoolfriends, placed a dead rat into a jar of gobstoppers at the local sweet shop. As a result of this prank, which became known as 'The Great Mouse Plot of 1924', the boys all received a caning from their headmaster. So please, all you youngsters taking this quiz, don't get any crazy ideas.
5. In the Inventing Room, Willy Wonka shows his guests his 'Hair Toffee' invention. What effect will it NOT have on anybody who eats it?

Answer: They will go bald

While Dahl was a student at Repton School in Derbyshire, the Cadbury chocolate company would occasionally send boxes of newly created chocolates for the students to taste test and give their opinions. It is believed that Roald daydreamed about inventing chocolate bars to impress Mr. Cadbury with and that this inspired him later in life to write his book.
6. What were the three courses that made up the 'Chewing Gum Meal'?

Answer: Tomato Soup, Roast Beef, Blueberry Pie

This is the chewing gum that caused Violet Beauregarde to turn into a giant blueberry. Even though Willy Wonka tells her not to eat the gum because it isn't 'quite right', Violet, who chews gum all day, doesn't listen to him and is actually encouraged by her parents.
7. Of all the fruits that are on the 'Lickable Wallpaper', what is the name of the fruit that is not a real fruit at all?

Answer: Snozzberry

In 1953, Roald married the American actress, Patricia Neal. In their thirty years of marriage they had five children; Olivia, Tessa, Theo, Ophelia and Lucy. Sadly Olivia died at the age of seven after contracting the measles. Roald later dedicated his book 'The B.F.G' to Olivia after her death.
8. What is so special about Willy Wonka's 'Square Sweets'?

Answer: They look round

This is a funny play on words that Roald Dahl was so good at. The Square Sweets don't look round in terms of their shape, obviously they look square, but because they have eyes they look round when the door is opened to see who it is coming through the door.
9. The Great Glass Lift has labels on every button, one label says 'Invisible Chocolate Bars' that are perfect for eating where?

Answer: In class

"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" was first published in the U.S. in 1964 with illustrations by Joseph Schindelman. Later editions have been illustrated by Quentin Blake. Two movie versions of the book have been made, the first in 1971 starred Gene Wilder in the role of Willy Wonka and the second from 2005 had Johnny Depp playing this part.
10. What is the name of Willy Wonka's invention that can send real chocolate bars to a television set?

Answer: Television Chocolate

Remembering that this is a quiz on the book and not the movies, Wonkavision is the name of this invention in the first movie and therefore incorrect. Mike Teavee managed to have himself sent to a television using this invention. When the process was over he was able to fit in the palm of his mother's hand.
