Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Just to start things off, do humans have an exoskeleton or an endoskeleton?

Answer: endoskeleton

Humans have an endoskeleton. The prefix "endo-" means inside or within. An exoskeleton is on the outside of a body, and can be found on nearly all arthropods (insects).
2. What is the anatomical name for the thighbone?

Answer: Femur

The femur (or thighbone) is the largest bone in the body. A lemur is actually an animal and the cranium and radius are both bones.
3. What are the three main components of a bone?

Answer: Compact bone, Spongy bone, Marrow

The compact bone lines the outside of the bone and is very hard. The spongy bone is found at either end of the bone and the bone marrow runs down the middle of the bone. Wax is not found in bones!
4. What is the anatomical name for the bone in the upper arm?

Answer: Humerus

The humerus is the only bone in the upper arm. Its nickname (but not anatomical name) is the "funny bone", due to the name's similarity to the word "humorous".
5. What is the anatomical name for the jaw bone?

Answer: mandible

The name of the jaw bone is the mandible. It is a very common site for fractures. It has four main parts - the left and right body and the left and right mandibular ramus.
6. There are two bones in the lower leg. What is the name of the larger bone?

Answer: Tibia

The tibia is the shinbone, and is the larger bone of the lower leg. When someone kicks you in the shin, they are kicking your tibia. It hurts so much because there is nothing between their foot and the tibia except for some skin, so there is nothing protecting it when you are kicked.
7. What is the name of the smaller bone in the lower leg?

Answer: Fibula

The fibula is the smaller bone in the lower leg. The other three are also bones in the body. The fibula is also called the calfbone. It is the thinnest of all the long bones and is connected to the tibia at the top and the bottom.
8. What do some bones produce?

Answer: red blood cells

Only larger bones produce red blood cells. This is done by the red bone marrow, a type of bone marrow.
9. Sometimes, an elderly person's bones or joints aren't as strong as they used to be and wear away. It is possible to replace these with a substitute, made out of metal. What is the metal often used in these replacements?

Answer: Titanium

Titanium is used in bone replacements because it is incredibly strong and light. Titanium also resists friction well, so the person's replacement won't grow hot when it is being used, because friction creates heat.
10. What do tendons do?

Answer: Connect muscles to bones

Tendons connect muscles to bones. This allows the skeleton to move. This is very important! Oh, and if you were wondering, ligaments (not tendons) connect bones to each other.

Well, that's the end of this quiz. I hope you enjoyed yourself and learnt something new! This was my first quiz of hopefully many to come, so I hope you look out for them!
