Science for Children Trivia Questions

1. Who was the famous Greek mathematician and inventor who, legend has it, ran naked through the streets shouting "Eureka!" after making an important discovery in the bath?

From Quiz
Famous Scientists for Kids

Answer: Archimedes

Archimedes, who lived in the third century BCE, was one of the greatest scientists of the ancient world. A popular story about him is that a king asked him to find out if a crown that had been made for him was pure gold or had been dishonestly mixed with silver. Archimedes understood that because gold is denser than silver it takes up less space, so if he could measure the volume of the crown, he could determine its purity, but he did not know how to do this. While getting into a bath, he noticed that the water level rose as he sank in. He realized that if he placed the crown in water, he could measure the amount of water displaced and compare this to the amount displaced by a block of pure gold of the same weight. If the crown was impure, then it would displace more water. Archimedes is said to have invented many useful devices such as a screw that could pump water out of the hold of a ship, and a giant claw attached to a crane that could lift an enemy ship out of the sea to stop it from attacking his city.

2. Which planet in our solar system is referred to as 'the red planet'?

From Quiz Perfect, Prefect

Answer: Mars

Mars is the fourth planet from the sun. Mars is called as 'the red planet' due to the reddish appearance of iron oxide on its surface. Mars is the second smallest planet after Mercury.

3. The chemical formula for water is H20. The O is oxygen but what is the H?

From Quiz Basic Science for Kids

Answer: Hydrogen

Water covers 70% of the earth including oceans, rivers, lakes, ponds, and brooks. Of that only about 1% is potable or drinkable.

4. Puff, puff, I'm running late, but can you answer this first: About one per cent of the sun is comprised of which element?

From Quiz Science for Kids

Answer: Oxygen

Oxygen is a chemical element. Its symbol is O and it comes in at number 8 on the periodic table. Although it comprises only one percent of the sun's mass, it's the most abundant element in the crust of our earth. We win! The sun itself is comprised of mostly hydrogen and helium, with much smaller amounts of other elements including oxygen, carbon, iron and neon.

5. Acids always have a pH value of less than what number?

From Quiz Science for Kids 2

Answer: 7

Acids have a pH value always less than 7. pH value stands for potential hydrogen. It tells us about the concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution. A pH less than 7 means a solution is acidic. A pH of exactly 7 indicates that a solution is neutral, like pure water. A pH value of more than 7 indicates the compound is basic.

6. The first thing we notice in the stream is the flowing water. Which two chemical elements make up water?

From Quiz Science in the Stream

Answer: Hydrogen and Oxygen

Each little unit (molecule) of water contains two atoms of hydrogen, each attached to a single, central oxygen atom. Water comes in three forms depending on the temperature: as solid ice (very cold), as liquid water (cool to very warm temperatures) and as steam, a gas (very hot).

7. When measuring the height of a person, which unit in the metric system would be used?

From Quiz Metric System Basics

Answer: Meters

An adult human usually has a height between 1.5 and 2 meters. A few people are taller than 2 meters, and some are shorter than 1.5 meters.

8. Chemistry - Which element did Ernest Rutherford use in his alpha particle scattering experiment?

From Quiz All-in-One

Answer: Gold

The element symbol for gold is Au from its Latin name of aurum. The atomic number of gold is 79. Gold is the most malleable metal and because of this quality, Rutherford used gold foil for the experiments in which he discovered the nucleus of the atom.

9. Why is our planet, the Earth, generally hotter at the equator than it is at the north and south poles?

From Quiz General Science for a Young Einstein

Answer: The Sun's energy is concentrated over a smaller area

Because the earth is a round object called a sphere, the light from the Sun doesn't fall evenly on its surface. If you imagine a beam of light falling at the equator and the same beam falling at the poles, because of the planet's shape the beam will be less concentrated nearer the poles (it's spread out over a larger area) and so the average temperature will be lower.

10. The rain cycle consists of three processes. Assuming we begin with water that is already on the ground, what is their correct order?

From Quiz I Know This Answer

Answer: Evaporation, condensation and precipitation (rainfall)

The rain cycle starts with evaporation of water from water bodies; it is followed by ascent of the warm air, leading to cooling and condensation of the water vapour. Finally, when the water molecules become large in size, they fall down as rainfall. And the cycle goes on and on.

11. Why is a campfire so hot?

From Quiz The wonderful world around us!

Answer: Burning wood releases energy

Burning requires a fuel (wood), oxygen from the air and a source of ignition (a match!). Burning, called combustion, is a chemical reaction that releases energy from the chemical bonds that make up the wood and this energy is released as heat.

12. What is a mixture of two or more metals called?

From Quiz For Young Scientists

Answer: alloy

When you mix two or more metals (elements) together, no matter what the metals are, the finished product is called an "alloy". The very first alloy that human beings ever used is called 'meteoric iron'. It's a naturally occurring alloy of nickel and iron that was first discovered in meteors which had hit the earth many years ago.

13. If this thing didn't exist we would all leave the ground and float in the air. What is it?

From Quiz Here, There, Everywhere

Answer: Gravity

Gravity is the force that keeps us all anchored to the earth. Every time you jump and come back down, or drop a book, or throw a ball into the air and catch it as it comes back that is gravity at work. Without it everyone and everything on Earth would just float off into space.

14. Oceanography is to oceans as herpetology is to ________.

From Quiz Extending the Science Branch

Answer: Reptiles

Oceanography is the study of oceans. The Pacific Ocean is the deepest ocean in the word at 13,740 feet deep. The deepest point in the Pacific Ocean is the Mariana Trench going even deeper at 36,200 feet. Herpetology is the study of reptiles and amphibians. The Greek word 'herpetos' means creeping.

15. What is the name of the force that slows and stops a ball rolling on the ground?

From Quiz Fun Bag of Science!

Answer: Friction

Friction always acts on the opposite direction of the applied force. If there was no friction life on earth would be miserable! If it was not for friction things would have trouble stopping moving.

16. What do you call the central part of an atom?

From Quiz A Science Quiz for Kids

Answer: Nucleus

The atom is a basic unit of matter. It consists of neutrons, protons and electrons.

17. If I want to write that book I've been thinking of for the last couple of decades which class of program do I use?

From Quiz What Type of Program Do I Use?

Answer: A word processor

A word processor lets you check that you have spelt everything correctly and will enable you to undertake formatting of text and adding in images. It is designed to allow the entry of text in a straightforward fashion.

18. One day mommy said we were going to the doctor's offices for my yearly physical. When it was my turn to be seen, the nurse told me to step on this platform. It had a lot of numbers across bars at the top. What was the nurse measuring?

From Quiz A Physical With a Nurse

Answer: my weight on a scale

In order to determine your weight, the scale has two bars at the top that slide across the numbers. When the scale balances, the two numbers that the bars point to (when added together) is your weight. You may also have a scale at your house.
