Answer: Dovewing

Tigerstar orders all the Clan cats to leave the Dark Forest early because the senior warriors, the ones who are dead and live in the Dark Forest, are planning a meeting on how to attack. Most of the Clan cats have no idea that the Dark Forest is planning to attack the Clans. Mapleshade and Hawkfrost do not allow Ivypool to attend, so she eavesdrops where the meeting is held, and she knows the Place of No Stars well enough to sneak around there without getting caught.

She is about to see the plans of attack that Brokenstar is drawing in the dirt when suddenly she is jolted awake by her sister, Dovewing. Dovewing, Lionblaze, Jayfeather, the three cats of the original prophecy, Firestar, and herself are the only ones that know Ivypool is going to the Dark Forest in her dreams to spy.

She snaps at Dovewing and tells her she was doing something important, and Dovewing says that she normally does not like being in the Dark Forest, and woke her up because her fur was standing on end.

Answer: Yellowfang

When Jayfeather storms into the woods after Brightheart and Briarlight talk to him about why losing his medicine cat duties outside the Clan is important, Firestar comes after him to comfort him. Jayfeather starts shouting that if he had not been born by a couple that broke both the warrior code and the medicine-cat code, nobody would think he had truly murdered Flametail, as he would then actually be blessed by StarClan. Firestar argues that if Leafpool and Crowfeather did not run away together, he would have never been born in the first place. "Why can't I think about me for once?" Jayfeather complains, and storms away from Firestar. Yellowfang appears and mimics Jayfeather's words, and tells Jayfeather that he is not important, only the survival of the Clan is.

She then says that he needs to find the fourth cat and tell the other cats of the prophecy that there is a fourth cat. Jayfeather then asks her to do one more thing: to find Flametail in StarClan and have him visit the ShadowClan medicine cat, Littlecloud, and tell him Jayfeather did not truly murder him, but Yellowfang says that StarClan is divided into Clans now. Jayfeather argues that Yellowfang used to be ShadowClan, but Yellowfang, outraged, shouts that she is only ThunderClan and disappears back to StarClan.

Answer: Brambleberry

Brambleberry, the cat who was RiverClan medicine cat while Crookedstar was growing up, visits Jayfeather to tell him that the Clans all have the same root, and that there is no cat with pure blood of one Clan. She then says that the blood that one has does not make a cat loyal or disloyal.

She says that a cat is only loyal to who they choose to be, and that loyalty is what makes the Clans strong. She says not to look for boundaries that aren't there, but to look at boundaries that are. She shows Jayfeather a bird's-eye view of the lake area, and tells him that that is how StarClan sees it: no boundaries separating the Clans. Brambleberry then tells Jayfeather he needs to unite the Clans as well as StarClan to make them see that they have to unite to win against the Dark Forest. Brambleberry repeats the last part of the prophecy, "Three must become four to save all the Clans", and disappears. Jayfeather then begins to dream in the Dark Forest, and he realizes that too many Clan cats have been recruited by the Place of No Stars.

Answer: Mothwing

Jayfeather is surprised that Mothwing has come, as she has no connection with StarClan and has not come to the Moonpool for a long time. She says Willowshine refused to come with her. They talk about the Dark Forest, how they are recruiting Clan cats in their dreams, and how Mothwing's brother, Hawkfrost, is involved. During the conversation, Jayfeather realizes Mothwing might be the fourth cat as she could not be touched by StarClan or the Dark Forest. Mothwing says that she will help make the medicine cats understand this situation, and that Jayfeather is not alone. Jayfeather thinks that before he would never expect Mothwing to help him fight the Place of No Stars, but realizes she may be the only other cat that can.

Answer: Cloudtail and Brightheart

When Lionblaze says this, Cinderheart spits back that it is not part of their destinies, but then softens and says that they should not torture themselves by wishing so. Cinderheart then says that he can pick who else they should hunt with by the lake.

He picks Thornclaw, who asks if they can bring Blossomfall too. The four go to the lake, but on the way Blossomfall's leg gets caught in a bramble, and Thornclaw tries to help her out. However, he accidentally mentions the wound she got from the Dark Forest training, alerting Lionblaze to the fact that they were not growing close, they were Dark Forest Clanmates. Cinderheart inspects Blossomfall's leg, and determines that it is just a light sprain.

When Lionblaze questions if she is correct, Cinderheart snaps back angrily. Due to this injury, the patrol does not bring back much prey.

Answer: They do not want to believe that they need another cat to help them save the Clans

This is why Yellowfang gets angry at Jayfeather after he storms off after Firestar. Even when Yellowfang tells him so, he does not want to admit it. After Jayfeather tells the other two, they as well are also resentful of the prophecy as it does not believe they can save the Clans themselves.

They all have their own guesses of who the fourth cat is; Jayfeather thinks it is Mothwing, Lionblaze thinks it is Hollyleaf, and Dovewing thinks it is Ivypool, although none of them have any outstanding supernatural abilities like the three have.

Answer: Tigerheart covers for her and sends the rest of the patrol away

Dovewing is so caught up in thinking about the fourth cat and how it might be Dovewing that she accidentally wanders up to the border. When she steps on a thorn, she squeals, and realizes how close she is to crossing into ShadowClan territory. A patrol of Rowanclaw, Ratscar, and Tigerheart is approaching, but Tigerheart says it is just a rabbit and that he will stay here and looks for ThunderClan warriors if there are any. Ratscar is not convinced as he does not smell rabbit, but Rowanclaw says that Blackstar wants them at the shore of the lake as a dog is running loose there and Blackstar wants to take care of it before it goes into the forest.

The two cats leave leaving Tigerheart with Dovewing. They argue about Dawnpelt's accusation against Jayfeather accusing him of murdering Flametail, but Tigerheart stops it and says that he misses her.

He then tells her to meet him at the same place at the border during the night as he leaves to rejoin the patrol when Ratscar calls him.

Answer: Firestar

While running back to the ThunderClan camp while thinking about Tigerheart, Dovewing crashes into Firestar. Firestar says he was thinking of something else too while he was walking through the forest, and did not see her until he crashed into her. Dovewing says she was worrying about something too, but she cannot say an alibi for what she was doing there. Firestar asks if she was listening for danger, to which Dovewing says yes, although she is annoyed that Firestar only thinks of her as a pair of ears that can listen for danger. Firestar and Dovewing talk about how hard it is knowing about the Dark Forest rising. Firestar says that he will help her to fight the Place of No Stars since she is so young.

Answer: Yes

Dovewing met Tigerheart many times in the night previously, and this time she does again. However, it is not shown, and the event is skipped over in the book. When Ivypool wakes up from the Dark Forest, Dovewing is constantly yawning and distracted. She claims that forest noises kept on waking her in the night, and Ivypool suggests she could stuff her ears with moss to block out the forest noises. Molepaw says he wished he had stuffed his ears with moss before he slept so he would not have been waken by Dovewing and Ivypool talking.

The four go to the training hollow to train. Multiple times Dovewing yawns or spaces out, and Ivypool is puzzled, as she was the one awake all night in the Place of No Stars.

Answer: Hollyleaf

When Dovewing tells her sister, she protests and says it cannot be her as she has no special power. Dovewing argues and says she has the courage to dream her way into and spy in the Dark Forest in her dreams. She asks if she has had any special dreams, but Ivypool points out that since she goes to the Dark Forest each night, she has no time for special dreams.

She says it must be Hollyleaf, as that was why she came back from the tunnels. Cherrypaw comes over and asks what is Hollyleaf, and says that she cannot practice her leaps as Molepaw is taking up the whole clearing.

A little while later, the two siblings argue as they are taking up each other's space, and Ivypool gets worried about what would happen later to her Clanmates.
