The Mermaids of "H2O" Trivia Quiz

"H2O: Just Add Water" is the most delightful and beautifully made show I've seen in many years. While this quiz takes all three seasons into account, most of the questions can be answered with knowledge of seasons one and two.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was Ronnie's girlfriend?

Answer: Jemima

In the episode "Lovesick", Ronnie the Dolphin was giving his food to Jemima, the pregnant dolphin the Marine Park had rescued. Ronnie would accept food only from Cleo, and she wondered if Ronnie fancied her, after swimming with Ronnie as a mermaid.

But later, Cleo remembered an article, written by Mitch the dolphin trainer, about dolphins being instinctive carers. In summary she concluded, "He was giving his food to Jemima: all he wanted was a girlfriend."
2. Who or what did Miss Chatham warn Cleo not to talk to?

Answer: Sea Perch

Sea Perch... you can never trust those fish!
3. Which of the 1950s mermaids was known to have performed a rescue?

Answer: Louise

The rescue chain is fascinating. Louise performed the only known mermaid rescue in the 1950s, and it was off-shore. Rikki performed the first modern rescue, but Louise's modern counterpart, Emma, performed the first deep-water off-shore rescue, namely of Zane. Back in the early 70s, Emma's mother Lisa performed a beach rescue of Zane's father Harrison when they were both 12 years old. And if that isn't enough, Lisa's son Elliot was rescued by Rikki in heavy surf when he was about 12 years old!
4. Which of our original three present-day mermaids has never performed a rescue in the first three seasons?

Answer: Cleo

Rikki is the Queen of Rescue, and was even rescued once herself - by Zane! Emma only rescued Zane. But Cleo has never performed a rescue in the first three seasons of the show.
5. Where was the first "official" (as opposed to moonstruck) smooch between Rikki and Zane?

Answer: in an elevator

The first ever smooch was on the island, but Rikki was moonstruck and therefore not quite herself. Their first official smooch has been described as the most romantic scene in the entire series.

The first thing Rikki ever said in the series was Zane's name.
6. Three wishes were successfully granted by Cleo. In order, who were the wish-makers?

Answer: Kim, Don, Lewis

If "Hocus Pocus" wasn't the funniest episode in season two I don't know what was!

Rikki originally tested the potion on her face in the cool room, but nothing happened. Cleo brought some home and Rikki spoiled the rest of the potion: "I only gave it a little zap." At home, Cleo discovered that "you have to be a 'mermaid' when the wish is made."

So, Kim wished for a shower, and got soaked in the sprinkler outside.

Cleo, knowing her dad would wish for her mum to come home, asked him to make a wish, but he wished for a new fish finder, and got one!

Finally, Lewis used the last of the good potion to wish away the fungal mess in the JuiceNet Cafe.
7. The famous phrase "I love you" was only ever said once in the entire first three series, between which two characters?

Answer: Lewis to Cleo

One thing that makes H2O so beautiful is the innocent, and oh so beautiful romance. Many fans have created their own romantic music videos of the show's couples. I cannot think of any other show I've ever seen with such beautifully depicted young romance.
8. Who are the only known childhood couple in the series?

Answer: Cleo and Lewis

Cleo stated outright that she had known Lewis since she was five years old. Speaking of Cleo's birthday parties, Lewis stated that he had been to them all. Why, they're a regular Thomas and Vada ("My Girl").

In a future series, I would sure love to see some flashback scenes of Cleo and Lewis as kids. I imagine there was a time when Lewis asked Cleo to marry him and she said yes... and Cleo never forgot about it.
9. Whom did Lisa Gilbert once rescue?

Answer: Harrison Bennett

Yes, as a Junior Lifesaver, she once rescued Harrison Bennett, when they were both 12 years old.

It is known that Harrison became a champion windsurfer, and held the record for windsurfing around Mako Island. This makes it a fair guess that he had a little surfing accident when Lisa rescued him. Thus it is novel that Lisa's son Elliot had a surfing accident and was rescued by Rikki in heavy surf. And of course, Lisa's daughter would later rescue Harrison's son!

Lisa fancied Harrison for some time after the rescue, but nothing came of it. Nevertheless, it is clear that the Gilberts and Bennetts are family friends, and that Lisa had some hope that Zane and Emma would connect, and never did.
10. What do Elliot Gilbert and Will Benjamin have in common?

Answer: They were both rescued by Rikki

Ah, lovely Rikki, the Queen of Rescue, has three to her credit.

It's quite obvious that Elliot fancied her, and tried to show off in heavy surf when he was told to stay on the beach. Rikki had to risk mermaid exposure on a public beach to get him out of the surf zone. And Elliot was raving that Rikki was the fastest swimmer ever - that she could outswim a dolphin!

The second was Zane, and more of an assist when he splashed his dad's champion windsurfer off the outer coast of Mako Island with sharks all around. Rikki was filming sharks underwater at the time and surrounded Zane with a wall of bubbles to try to keep the sharks away while Lewis completed the surface rescue.

But the Will rescue was truly beautiful, where he had passed out free diving too deep too fast. Rikki raced to the scene and gave Will some artificial resuscitation 70m underwater and brought him to the surface. From then on, Will always regarded Rikki as an angel.
