Written by Jacqueline Wilson and illustrated by Nick Sharratt, "The Story of Tracy Beaker" was first published in 1991. Since then more than 750,000 copies have been sold.
2. What was the name of the baby Tracy liked at her previous children's home?

Answer: Camilla

Tracy liked Camilla and used to put her hair into little plaits and play games with her. Wayne and Becky are two of the younger children at Tracy's current children's home and Jenny is the housemother there.

4. What were the names of Tracy's first foster parents?

Aunty Peggy used to smack Tracy and her cooking was disgusting. Julie and Ted were Tracy's second foster parents, Jenny and Mike are in charge of her current children's home while Aunty Vi and Uncle Stanley are going to be Peter's foster parents.

Jacqueline Wilson was born in 1945 and started writing when she was only nine years old. She first worked for a publishing company and became a journalist on the girls' magazine, "Jackie".
5. What does Tracy like doing best?

Answer: Story-writing

Tracy likes painting as well, but she likes writing stories best. She made a special baby book for Camilla at her previous home. Tracy jeers when her friend Peter first suggests playing games like noughts and crosses but ends up quite enjoying them. She thinks the rabbit at the children's home is limp.

Although her first book was published in 1969, Jacqueline Wilson did not become a full-time author until 1990. Since then, though, she has written prolifically and altogether over eighty of her books have been published.
6. Who broke Justine's Mickey Mouse alarm clock?

Answer: Tracy did it accidentally

Tracy was playing with Justine's Mickey Mouse clock and made the arm whiz round so fast that it fell off but she didn't mean to break it. Justine wasn't there when it happened and neither was Louise, another girl in the home.

Altogether over 20 million copies of Jacqueline Wilson's books have been sold in the UK alone. Since 2004 she has been the most-borrowed author from British libraries.
7. What does Tracy first want to be when she grows up?

Answer: Chat show hostess

Although she changes her mind later, at first Tracy wants to have her own chat show with famous guests. Her mother does not visit her and Tracy likes to imagine this is only because she is too busy and could be an actress or Hollywood film star. Adele, an older girl in the home, works as a shop assistant on Saturdays.

"The Big Read" was a poll conducted by the BBC in 1993 to find Britain's favourite book and more than 7,000 titles were nominated. Of these, "The Story of Tracy Beaker" was voted the 31st most popular book while three of Jacqueline Wilson's other books were also among the 100 most popular.
8. What item of Cam's clothing does Tracy like?

Answer: Socks

Cam is a writer who visits the home and Tracy initially compares Cam's appearance unfavourably with that of her mother. Then Tracy notices that Cam's socks have a pattern of books and she would like to have a pair herself.

A number of Jacqueline Wilson's other books have also won awards. For example, "The Illustrated Mum" was chosen as the Children's Book of the Year in the British Book Awards of 2000 whilst "Girls In Tears" won the same award in 2003. "Lizzie Zipmouth" won the Nestle Smarties Gold Award in the 6-8 years category in 2000.
9. Cam buys Tracy some Smarties and tells her to share them with the other children. What does Tracy give Justine, her worst enemy?

Answer: A pen

Cam gave Tracy a Mickey Mouse pen as well and Tracy was really pleased. Tracy gives all the other children a Smartie and means to offer Justine one too. But Justine is crying because her father hasn't come to visit so Tracy gives her the Mickey Mouse pen instead.

Jacqueline Wilson herself has received recognition for her work. In the 2002 Queen's Birthday Honours she was awarded the OBE (Order of the British Empire) for services to literacy in schools and in the 2008 New Year's Honours she was made a DBE (Dame of the British Empire).
10. Who is Tracy's best friend at the end of the book?

Answer: Peter

Peter and Tracy have the same birthday and at first she resents having to share a cake with him. However, he likes her and gradually they become friends. Louise was Tracy's first best friend at the home but then became Justine's best friend instead. Mike is the housefather and Elaine is Tracy's social worker.

Once every two years in the UK the title of Children's Laureate is awarded to a writer or illustrator of children's books. In 2005 Jacqueline Wilson became the fourth person to receive this award for outstanding achievement in the field of children's literature.
