Answer: a swan

Louis is a swan born in Canada. He is the main character. The book mostly follows him. However, the first part follows Sam Beaver.
2. What type of animal is Sam Beaver, or is he a human?

Answer: a human

Even though 'Beaver' is Sam's last name, he is a human. He encountered Louis when he was in Canada with his father. Louis came over and untied Sam's shoelaces.
3. What can Louis not do?

Answer: speak

Louis can hear and see just fine. Plus, he is a wonderful trumpet player. When he was born, something went wrong and he couldn't speak.
4. Where is one place that Louis does not visit?

Answer: a trumpet store, where he stole the trumpet

Louis was in the zoo for a while. That is where he saw the most beautiful female swan... He worked for a man on the pond, playing the trumpet for the Swan Boat. He stayed in a hotel for a while. But he never went to a trumpet store.
5. Who stole the trumpet for Louis?

Answer: his father

His father got the trumpet for him when he found Louis had no voice. His father was worried that Louis would not be able to find a mate because of his lost voice. Louis' siblings play little part in the book at all.

He had always felt guilty that his father had stolen the trumpet, so he saved up his earnings to buy it. But the store owner doesn't know that he is trying to pay him back.
7. What does Louis get a medal for?

Answer: saving someone's life

Louis gets the medal at the camp he was in with Sam Beaver. He was getting paid to play the trumpet as the wake up call. Someone was drowning and Louis dived in to rescue him.

Answer: none of these

A fox actually tried to do it. It was in the beginning of the book.

Answer: Sam Beaver

Sam Beaver threw a stick at the fox, causing him to run away. That was when the swans realized that Sam was nice. He got to see the babies hatch.

Answer: no one did
