Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first creatures that Gregor and Boots encounter are giant cockroaches. What are they called in the Underland?

Answer: Crawlers

The roaches form a very special relationship with Gregor's youngest sister Boots. Later in the series, with the help of a friend, Boots even begins to learn a bit of their language.
2. Critical to the balance of power in the Underland are the giant Bats. They are allied with the humans and are called what?

Answer: Fliers

The fate of the bats and humans are so intertwined that they have a special ceremony called "bonding" in which one bat and one human pledge lifelong loyalty to one another.
3. The oversized rats are the mortal enemies of the Underland humans and lead the armies who are a constant threat. How are the rats known throughout the Underland?

Answer: Gnawers

The rats are equal to or surpass the humans in intelligence and war fighting abilities. As young pups they learn to echolocate which provides them a distinct advantage in the dimly lit Underland.
4. Unpredictable in their allegiances, the spiders can be useful allies or formidable foes. What are they called by their friends and foes alike?

Answer: Spinners

Underland spiders are very sensitive to noise and can be held off for a time by shrieking sounds. When on good terms with the Underland humans they spin webs that humans use for many purposes including ropes, hammocks, and diapers for their babies.
5. Annoyingly self-centered and constantly hungry, the fireflies are creatures that must be endured rather than befriended. How are they known in the Underland?

Answer: Shiners

For long journeys over unlit terrain, the use of the fireflies can be a necessary burden. Unfortunately, they are extremely temperamental and have little sense of loyalty beyond an employer's ability to whet their voracious appetites.
6. The ants are a voracious enemy who attack with a singleminded ferocity. What is their nickname?

Answer: Cutters

The ants attack en masse and will not hesitate to sacrifice themselves for the advancement of the colony. Fortunately, they are encountered very rarely.
7. The mice are frequent victims of the rats' cruelty and abuse. As a result, they befriend the humans who call them by what nickname?

Answer: Nibblers

The mice have a unique characteristic in that they are gifted mathematicians and puzzle solvers. Their names reflect these talents.
8. Though they play only a minor role in the overall series, the lurking menace of the snakes cannot be ignored. To the people of the Underland they are known as what?

Answer: Twisters

Much of the Underland is uninhabitable for the snakes so they must survive in the jungle area far away from the human city of Regalia.
9. The star-nosed moles cause numerous problems for the inhabitants of Regalia. This is the name that they have been given throughout the Underland.

Answer: Diggers

The moles were treated very cruelly by Bartholomew of Sandwich, the founder of Regalia. As a result, they sought vengeance many years later as allies of the rats.
10. Finally, the humans themselves have earned a nickname amongst the other inhabitants of the Underland. They are called by what name?

Answer: Killers

This nickname was not well received by the humans though the more thoughtful amongst them understand why it was given. Years of war and sorting out differences at the end of spears can earn a reputation.
